Abstract
The immaturity of fog abatement technologies for highway usage has led to growing interest towards developing intelligent transportation systems that are capable of estimating meteorological visibility distance under foggy weather conditions. This capability is crucial to support next-generation cooperative situational awareness and collision avoidance systems as well as onboard driver assistance systems. This chapter presents a survey and a comprehensive taxonomy of daytime visibility distance estimation approaches based on a review and synthesis of the literature. The proposed taxonomy is both comprehensive (i.e., captures a wide spectrum of earlier contributions) and effective (i.e., enables easy comparison among previously proposed approaches). The authors also highlight some open research issues that warrant further investigation.

Active Contour Model for Medical Applications
Edges are a partition between different textures of the objects in the class. Edge also can be differentiated as discontinuities in image intensity between two adjacent pixels. The edges of an image are always the important property that offer an indication of higher frequency. Detection of edges in an image may help for so many image processing applications like image segmentation, data compression, and also help for well matching, such as image reconstruction and so on.

A Review of Image Segmentation Evaluation in the 21st Century
Edge detection is the most common approach for detecting discontinuities in images, and is the fundamental step in edge-based parallel process for segmentation. An edge is a local concept. To form a complete boundary of an object, edge detection should be followed by edge linking or connection.

Semi-Automatic Vertebra Segmentation
is a terminology in image processing and computer vision which consists on the location of edges by identifying points in a digital image at which the image brightness changes sharply or more formally has discontinuities. The approaches based on first or second derivative of grey-scale intensity in the neighbourhood of each pixel are usually used.
