What is Switch

Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Third Edition
A network device that selects a path or circuit for sending a unit of data to its next destination. A switch may also include the function of a router (see above). In general, a switch is a simpler and faster mechanism than a router, which requires knowledge about the network and how to determine the route.

Development of a University Networking Project
Active network device that operates at the OSI model level 2. Having affinities with repeaters and bridges, traffic is isolated for network segments. Several simultaneous communications are possible for different network nodes. Collisions can be reduced and eliminated for full-duplex operation. If a switch has also routing capabilities, it is named switch/router.

Application of the P2P Model for Adaptive Host Protection
A hardware device used to connect more than two hosts on a network. It forwards every received network packet to the interface of the destination specified in the header of the packet. Switches are more secure than network hubs.
