What is XML Schema

Handbook of Research on Computational Grid Technologies for Life Sciences, Biomedicine, and Healthcare
A definition of the structure of an XML document. A schema contains a set of rules that dictate how an XML document must look like in order to be an instance of this schema. The relationship between a schema and an XML document implementing it can be compared with a class definition and an instance in object-oriented programming.

Abstract
The principal goal of this chapter is to elucidate the future requirements of healthgrids if they are to become the infrastructure of choice for biomedical research and healthcare. These require ments take many forms, technical, organizational and economic, with initiatives required in the domains of ethical and legal regulation. Thus, particular objectives of the chapter are to explore and analyse each of these domains to a sufficient depth to be able to make sense of the overall picture.

On the Query Evaluation in XML Databases
An alternative to DTDs. It is a schema language that assesses the validity of a well-formed element and attribute information items within an XML document. There are two major schema models: W3C XML Schema and Microsoft Schema.

An Adaptative User Interface for Genealogical Document Transcription
XSD is the specification of the structure of an XML document. It expresses a set of rules to which an XML document must conform in order to be considered ’valid’ according to that schema.

Using Semantic Web Tools for Ontologies Construction
With respect to DTDs, a more complete way of specifying the semantics of a set of XML markup elements. XML Schema supplies a complete grammar for specifying the structure of the elements allowing, e.g., to define the cardinality of the offspring elements, default values, etc.

RDF and OWL for Knowledge Management
A more complete methodology, instead of using DTDs, for specifying the semantics of a set of XML markup elements. XML Schema supplies a complete grammar for describing the structure of the elements allowing, e.g., to define the cardinality of the offspring elements, default values, etc.

Integrating Heterogeneous Data for Big Data Analysis
Similar to a DTD, an XML Schema defines a list of permissible elements and the structure of an XML document. However, an XML Schema also defines the data types, default values, and non-null/null validity of elements. In addition, an XML Schema can indicate which elements are child elements, and for these child elements, it defines their order and number. It also describes clearer relationships and allows inheritance.
