Description

Advancements in computer-generated sensory have made the concept of believable virtual environments a reality. With the availability of such technologies, new questions are raised as to how these technologies can be applied beyond gaming applications and how further improvements can be made to allow for full digital immersion.

The International Journal of Virtual and Augmented Reality (IJVAR) presents interdisciplinary research on the technological, social, legal, and policy implications of virtual and mixed reality integration and how the division between real and virtual worlds is becoming less distinct. Fostering interdisciplinary applied research and a unique forum for novel solutions for virtual immersion and mixed reality, the articles found within IJVAR are essential to the research needs of graduate-level students, researchers, and professionals interested in topics relevant to the digitization of everyday life.

Topics Covered

  • 3D interactive graphics
  • Collaborative environments
  • Computer Simulation
  • Computer Vision

Editor(s)-in-Chief Biography

Dr Cristina Portalés (PhD in Geodesy and Cartography, 2008) is senior researcher at the Institute of Robotics and Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat de València (Spain), where she previouslyhad been a Juan de la Cierva post-doc fellow. She formerly graduated with a double degree: Engineer in Geodesy and Cartography from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (Spain) and MSc in Surveying and Geoinformation from Technische Universität Wien (Austria). Afterwards she was a PhD research fellow at the Mixed Reality Laboratory of the University of Nottingham (UK, 2005) and at the Interaction and Entertainment Research Centre of the Nanyang University of Singapore (Singapore, 2006). She was the first woman to receive the best paper EH Thompson Award, given by the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (2010). From 2011-2012 she worked at AIDO (technological institute of Optics, Colour and Imaging), being primarily involved in the technical management of the FP7 project SYDDARTA. She is the author of more than 50 scientific publications including international conferences, high impact journals, books and book chapters. Her current research interests are focused on geometric calibration, image processing, 3D reconstruction, multispectral imaging, HCI and augmented reality.
Professor Marcos Fernández is MsC in Physical Sciences and PhD in Computer Engineering by the Universidad de Valencia. He is currently Professor in the Computer Science Department of the Universidad de Valencia and coordinator of the ARTEC research group at the Institute of Robotics and Information and Communication Technologies (IRTIC) of the same University. During the past 17 years he has been working in the research areas of virtual and augmented reality, interactive charts and personal-computer multimodal interactions. During the past 12 years he has been in charge of coordinating the ARTEC research group, with more than 30 researchers in these lines, for application mainly in training, virtual prototyping and assistance to people with disabilities, and being the principal investigator of more than 30 research projects. In the last five years he has developed the positioning and motion capture for human-computer interaction in the field of multimodal interaction devices.
