In this work the authors propose a novel Selectivity-Based Keyword Extraction (SBKE) method, which extracts keywords from the source text represented as a network. The node selectivity value is calculated from a weighted network as the average weight distributed on the links of a single node and is used in the procedure of keyword candidate ranking and extraction. The authors show that selectivity-based keyword extraction slightly outperforms an extraction based on the standard centrality measures: in/out-degree, betweenness and closeness. Therefore, they include selectivity and its modification – generalized selectivity as node centrality measures in the SBKE method. Selectivity-based extraction does not require linguistic knowledge as it is derived purely from statistical and structural information of the network. The experimental results point out that selectivity-based keyword extraction has a great potential for the collection-oriented keyword extraction task.

In many applications one has to fetch and assemble pieces of information coming from more than one source for building a semantic warehouse offering more advanced query capabilities. In this paper the authors describe the corresponding requirements and challenges, and they focus on the aspects of quality and value of the warehouse. For this reason they introduce various metrics (or measures) for quantifying its connectivity, and consequently its ability to answer complex queries. The authors demonstrate the behaviour of these metrics in the context of a real and operational semantic warehouse, as well as on synthetically produced warehouses. The proposed metrics allow someone to get an overview of the contribution (to the warehouse) of each source and to quantify the value of the entire warehouse. Consequently, these metrics can be used for advancing data/endpoint profiling and for this reason the authors use an extension of VoID (for making them publishable). Such descriptions can be exploited for dataset/endpoint selection in the context of federated search. In addition, the authors show how the metrics can be used for monitoring a semantic warehouse after each reconstruction reducing thereby the cost of quality checking, as well as for understanding its evolution over time.

Evaluating federated Linked Data queries requires consulting multiple sources on the Web. Before a client can execute queries, it must discover data sources, and determine which ones are relevant. Federated query execution research focuses on the actual execution, while data source discovery is often marginally discussed—even though it has a strong impact on selecting sources that contribute to the query results. Therefore, the authors introduce a discovery approach for Linked Data interfaces based on hypermedia links and controls, and apply it to federated query execution with Triple Pattern Fragments. In addition, the authors identify quantitative metrics to evaluate this discovery approach. This article describes generic evaluation measures and results for their concrete approach. With low-cost data summaries as seed, interfaces to eight large real-world datasets can discover each other within 7 minutes. Hypermedia-based client-side querying shows a promising gain of up to 50% in execution time, but demands algorithms that visit a higher number of interfaces to improve result completeness.

Ensuring data quality in Linked Open Data is a complex process as it consists of structured information supported by models, ontologies and vocabularies and contains queryable endpoints and links. In this paper, the authors first propose an objective assessment framework for Linked Data quality. The authors build upon previous efforts that have identified potential quality issues but focus only on objective quality indicators that can measured regardless on the underlying use case. Secondly, the authors present an extensible quality measurement tool that helps on one hand data owners to rate the quality of their datasets, and on the other hand data consumers to choose their data sources from a ranked set. The authors evaluate this tool by measuring the quality of the LOD cloud. The results demonstrate that the general state of the datasets needs attention as they mostly have low completeness, provenance, licensing and comprehensibility quality scores.

Access to hundreds of knowledge bases has been made available on the Web through public SPARQL endpoints. Unfortunately, few endpoints publish descriptions of their content (e.g., using VoID). It is thus unclear how agents can learn about the content of a given SPARQL endpoint or, relatedly, find SPARQL endpoints with content relevant to their needs. In this paper, the authors investigate the feasibility of a system that gathers information about public SPARQL endpoints by querying them directly about their own content. With the advent of SPARQL 1.1 and features such as aggregates, it is now possible to specify queries whose results would form a detailed profile of the content of the endpoint, comparable with a large subset of VoID. In theory it would thus be feasible to build a rich centralised catalogue describing the content indexed by individual endpoints by issuing them SPARQL (1.1) queries; this catalogue could then be searched and queried by agents looking for endpoints with content they are interested in. In practice, however, the coverage of the catalogue is bounded by the limitations of public endpoints themselves: some may not support SPARQL 1.1, some may return partial responses, some may throw exceptions for expensive aggregate queries, etc. The authors' goal in this paper is thus twofold: (i) using VoID as a bar, to empirically investigate the extent to which public endpoints can describe their own content, and (ii) to build and analyse the capabilities of a best-effort online catalogue of current endpoints based on the (partial) results collected.
