This work explores new dimensions of corporate strategy with a clear focus on strategic alignment and project definition. Project portfolio management offers processes, tools, and knowledge that help the global alignment of different organizational levels with business. In terms of project portfolio management, the causes of failure can be quite diverse. The development of a tool, namely, the X-matrix can help organizations to define and structure strategic objectives, projects, metrics, and those responsible. This work intends to understand the benefits of applying the X-matrix, both in terms of strategic planning and in project portfolio management. The case study carried out at “Company Q" confirms its applicability from the planning to the implementation of the strategy.

Current conditions in metal mining, increasing operating costs, lower ore grades, and deeper deposits, make it necessary to take technological breaks to allow for high operating and production efficiencies. In Chile, there are integrated operations centers at the project level. The implementation of state-of-the-art technology has encountered problems such as the lack of a business perspective co-constructed in a political-technical system that breaks with the rigidity of the usual criteria and practices. The resistance to the redistribution of power so as not to perceive these centers as an operational anomaly to overcome the preference to operate manually is generating doubt of their real contribution of value. A transformation cannot be imposed but must be co-created. The knowledge of the trade union networks opens to the company culture possibilities of action that, in the face of a paradigmatic change, emerge to constitute value. This work shows the knowledge strategies to turn unions into cognitive assets to achieve success in the implementation of COR.

Most texts on project governance and project management portrays the organization as populated by anonymous people in abstract roles like ‘project manager’, ‘sponsor’, ‘team member’. This paper takes the contrasting position that the project organization is developed by individuals with a specter of competences, strong and weak sides and relations to other people and organizations. The storyline presents a case study from a real-life project developing a new culture institution in Norway over a period of 10 years. Data was gathered ex-post by two researchers through interviews and document studies. The paper first defines key concepts and then presents an analytical framework for the purpose of analyzing the roles in this case story. It gives new insight to the roles as project manager and project executive. The story illustrates the importance of continuity and persistence in the role as project executive. These issues are relevant in future projects given the growing size and complexity seen in projects and the focus on stakeholder value that is prominent in project literature.

The goal of this chapter is to present lessons learned and insights gained from managing the Ivar Aasen project. Lessons were collected through 28 interviews with key project members and contractors. Findings show that Ivar Aasen was executed under considerable uncertainty regarding the market situation, access to suppliers and was completed under very strict time schedule. The project was complex with over 140 suppliers and subcontractors that were globally distributed. The project was also the first major project for the operator company. Findings shows that the underlying context of the project was a source of several challenges encountered during execution. In spite of these challenges, the project was completed on budget and on schedule and now the field is in full operation. The paper presents a narrative description of the challenges encountered as well as the factors that contributed to project success. Based on insights gained, the paper presents 18 recommendations that should be adhered to succeed with projects that exhibits similar characteristics as Ivar Aasen project.

The objective of the study was to measure the efficiency of Bangladeshi leasing firms through DEA and relate efficiency with profitability. Twenty-two leasing companies were selected according to simple random sampling method. Average aggregate productivity of firms over the period was only 24.17%. Average input and output technical efficiencies were 81.2% and 91.1% respectively. By changing the scale of operation, firms can increase their efficiency level by 20.43% to reach maximum productive scale size. The problem of firms lie in scale and mix efficiencies which implies that firms are yet to achieve economies of scale and scope. The firms are not producing or generating their outputs at appropriate proportions and are weak in innovation & proliferation of new services. Return on asset is significantly associated with scale efficiency EPS is significantly related to most efficiency measures. In most of the cases profitability indicators are weakly positively related with efficiency measures.

This study analysed project management competency factors which contribute to project success in the construction industry in Gaborone, Botswana. Primary data was collected from 60 randomly sampled project managers from construction companies in Gaborone using a questionnaire. Data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel and presented in the form of graphs and tables. Findings revealed that clear goals of project, roles and responsibilities of project team, communications and consultations with stakeholders and compliance with the planned budget, time frame and performance criteria have a high impact on the success of a project. It was also concluded that experience of a project manager has significant influence on their performance thus contributing to the overall project success. Furthermore, despite the technical nature of the construction industry, management competency has become almost as equally as important as technical competency in the undertaking of projects.

This paper presents a qualitative risk assessment tool based on fuzzy set theory to estimate the amount of activity duration overrun under the combinatory effect of multiple risk factors. Applying proposed methodology, a set of duration modifiers to calculate the optimistic, most-likely and pessimistic duration values under uncertainty are calculated. To elaborate the methodology, a simulated bridge project with ten risk factors affecting activities duration is presented. Proposed model contributes to knowledge that could help minimize the schedule overrun and improve risk mitigation strategies through providing risk-based duration estimates instead of discrete values. Advantages of the developed approach compared to existing models include (1) considering the combinatory effect of multiple risk factors on activity duration, (2) accounting for uncertainty in experts’ evaluations by employing the interval-valued fuzzy numbers, and (3) utilizing a discrete fuzzy weighted average algorithm which avoids creation of incorrect fuzzy membership functions.

In Ethiopia, infrastructure, particularly road construction, has been the most essential driver of economic growth. Simultaneously, it is widely acknowledged and analyzed that the domestic road construction industry is inefficient, threatening its role as a driver of the country's economic growth. Thus, the objective of the study was to make comparative analysis of domestic and foreign contractors’ performance in Ethiopian road construction in terms of cost, time, and quality. To meet the objective of the study a document review, semi-structured interview, and focused group discussion were used as a data collection tool. Based on analysis, the finding shows that the domestic contractors are far from being competitive in terms of cost overrun, time overrun and quality performance but it is promising progress over time. This necessitates the participation of both the construction industry and the government in improving the sector's competitiveness, Local road construction firms operate in a challenging business climate.

It is common especially in developing countries that implementing a performance management system (PMS) in public institutions face numerous challenges. This may be due to poor leadership; lack of goal setting; poor alignment of individual personal objectives with organizational goals; lack of communication lack of training and personal development; lack of monitoring, review, and performance feedback; lack of change management initiatives; and no reward for exceptional performance. Adopting a systematic literature review and critical content analysis, this paper focuses on the concept of management systems, particularly the implementation of the PMS, identifies the challenges hindering the implementation of the PMS in an organization, and highlights the success factors of PMS with reference to state-owned enterprises.

The public transport system is essential for any community to develop socio-economic growth. Performance indicators are the indication tools that determine where the defects are. As a result, the greater Amman municipality GAM has addressed this issue by launching a new transport system called the “Amman Bus Rapid Transit” BRT system that serves the public. Therefore, this paper investigates the sustainability performance indicators with respect to the economic, environmental, and social dimensions that measure the Amman BRT system. The literature review was the first tool used to generate indicators followed by commencing semi-structured interviews with five experts in the field. The findings indicated that there are 13 indicators that can be used to measure the sustainability performance of the Amman BRT system. Moreover, the results showed that the overall indicators are significant, but the most important one is affordability within the economic dimension. The current study recommended extending the methodology to use different multi-criteria decision-making techniques.

Codelco Chile will revolutionize underground mining as we know it today. The large infrastructure developed should be automated and monitored according to the most recent advances in the field. It implies a systemic conception of the operation to allow the remote control of communications and connectivity of the organization, making possible its coordination, cohesion, and management. The foregoing requires the implementation of an integrated technological model, which includes semi-autonomous operations from an integrated operations and control centre, but for this to happen, the entire organization needs to be adjusted. We propose a systemic model based on the control of the Organizational Waste (Variety No Required VNR). To reduce the loss of value (waste) need to evaluate and correct the incoherence in the decision-making processes, break in the continuity of the information flows by poorly designed organizational structures and by the elevated risk in redundancy values because of the disconnection between these.

The Government Enterprise (GE) implemented a turnaround strategy to enhance service efficacy and citizenry satisfaction in 2014. However, this GE takes too long like three months to issue any key documents such as birth, death, marriage certificates, passports, and work permits today. This reflects that the efficacy of services and the satisfaction of citizens is questionable. Hence, the main objective of the research was to investigate the turnaround strategy implementation in GE. We focus on rules for teleworking generated by the COVID-19 that exist without a national strategy. The project will address telework and trust issues: performance, accountability, effectiveness, and efficiency. It will address the need for and existence of a shared understanding where leaders and employees openly discuss the challenges telework presents. The project also asks whether there are impediments or obstacles that organizations could remove or reduce to enable employees to accomplish the same amount of work they are currently doing in the office, but in a shorter duration of time while teleworking.

This study attempts to identify the factors that drive employee engagement in the banking industry. The empirical setting of the study was fourteen Indian banks. A survey with the help of a questionnaire was conducted to collect data (n=700). Data were analyzed using multivariate data analysis techniques. A model identifying the variables that drive employee engagement was developed and tested. Results of exploratory factor analysis revealed six factors that drive employee engagement: emotional satisfaction, perceived fairness, personal development, culture, clear communication, and compensation. Results of regression analysis showed that two of these factors, i.e. emotional satisfaction and compensation were significant in the overall model. Integration of the results with the reinforcement theory suggests that satisfaction of the emotional needs of the employees and system of compensation can be systematically, selectively and differentially used in banks to align employee behaviours with behaviours typically associated with high levels of engagement and organizational success.
