Seeking Multiple Formats
All books must contain new (not previously published) content and will be required to undergo a double-blind peer review process to ensure the highest level of quality and accuracy. Editors and authors may choose from the following available book formats below (please note that IGI Global does not publish traditional textbooks or theses/dissertations):
Authored References: Written entirely by up to five authors, Authored References are comprised of illustrative chapters that delve into emerging research in niche areas. Though similar in some ways to Edited Reference books, these books tend to be smaller and more compact, featuring focused discussions on key models, methodologies, and concepts from a narrowed point-of-view. They are ideal for researchers, faculty, and students seeking to enhance their studies and discover innovative research in developing areas and include 15+ chapters and 160,000+ words
Edited References: Due to the diverse worldly perspectives they supply, edited formats are currently the most popular publication at IGI Global as they are more highly sought after by libraries and offer a high level of networking opportunities. Similar to Authored References in their concise discussions of the latest models and concepts within a specific area, Edited References utilize a more collaborative approach and include contributing authors with varying backgrounds and experience. These formats include 15+ chapters and 160,000+ words of highly sought, current, and original research.
Protocols: Protocols are edited or authored books that introduce and guide readers through the current best practices, laboratory methods, policies and protocols, and more within a specific area. Covering everything from operational procedures to clinical trials, these peer-reviewed books provide the latest insights on standards and practices across all scientific and technological fields. Acting as handbooks or manuals, each chapter contains colored figures that enhance the understanding and reproducibility of the methods outlined within. They include 10+ chapters and 110,000+ words.
Casebooks: These edited books are ideal instructional tools for courses as they provide current research in the form of real-life experiences, implementations, and applications. At 15+ cases/chapters and 120,000+ words, casebooks differ slightly from the Authored and Edited References as they focus on offering solutions, strategies, perspectives, and best practices for real-world use. They are marketed to academicians, libraries, as well as to professional organizations, associations, and societies.
Handbooks of Research: Consisting of 1-3 volumes of careful examination, Handbooks of Research are comprised of a wide breadth of information with sizeable chapters of exceptionally focused research. Containing at least 25 chapters, these incisive titles provide a comprehensive assessment on inclusive topics and present research methodologies that thoroughly describe the discipline of focus. These edited titles are classified as major reference works and contain contributions from the world’s leading experts and offer well-rounded coverage of some of the most cutting-edge and trending concepts. They are ideal for academicians, researchers, and libraries. A one-volume handbook of research is at least 25+ chapters and 250,000+ words, while a two-volume is at least 40+ chapters and 500,000+ words.
Encyclopedias: The largest major reference work format IGI Global produces at a minimum of 750,000+ words and 250+ articles, Encyclopedias are between 3 and 10 volumes. These edited formats contain perspectives from hundreds of authors as they contain abbreviated articles that offer critical perspectives on current issues and controversies, as well as provide prospective solutions and future directions in the field.
Additional publication formats such as medical atlases will also be considered.
As a reminder, the difference between editor and author responsibilities are as follows:
  • Edited Books – The editors leading the book project are responsible for the recruitment of book chapters from contributing authors, utilizing the eEditorial Discovery® submission system to manage the double-blind peer review process, and the authorship and submission of front and back matter (i.e., the Preface, Introduction, Conclusion, etc.).
  • Authored Books – The authors on the book project are responsible for writing and submitting all book chapters and for making necessary revisions based on reviewer feedback. They also are responsible for the authorship and submission of the front and back matter (i.e., the Preface, Introduction, Conclusion, etc.).

Submitting a Book Proposal Form
To submit a book proposal for consideration, please fill out the online book proposal form. Even if you are unable to start working on the project immediately, we still recommend submitting a proposal. Here are some key elements that must be completed in the form:
  • The full names, affiliations, emails, CVs (Word document or PDF accepted), research areas, countries, and highest degree earned of all the editors/authors on the project.
  • At least three potential titles.
  • 3-10 keywords to help us categorize the book.
  • A synopsis of the project (this can be as in-depth or as simple as you like, just be sure we have enough information to fully understand the project’s topic and themes).
  • A tentative table of contents/topics covered (for edited books, this is more of a topics covered whereas with authored books we like to see a more conclusive plan in the style of a table of contents).
  • The objectives, impacts, and values of the proposed book.
  • The target audience and potential uses of the proposed book.
  • The type of publication.
  • Format considerations (approximately how many words, chapters, etc.).
  • A timeline for the project (less than 6 months, 7-9 months, or 10-11 months).
  • Marketing considerations.
  • For Edited Books Only: A plan for reaching contributors (diversity must be displayed throughout the chapters of edited books by recruiting people from diverse regions. Therefore, a plan for reaching contributors from diverse regions and beyond a specific region or country is vital in the proposal.)
