Are Advances In Genetic Research Reducing Our Humanity?
PBS.org recently named one of 2015's biggest breakthroughs as the new method for editing genes: CRISPR. This new technology is cheaper and more precise than gene editing tools of the past, allowing scientists to snip out faulty sections of DNA and replace specific genes in living cells. CRISPR brings humankind one step closer to "designer babies" and gene selection in the future.

Genetic modification and enhancement of human beings has recently become a central issue in biomedical ethics, since today's technology could be used to change and to shape our biological characteristics, our cognitive and psychological capacities, and even our dispositions. The ethical implications of this technological leap are still far from being clear: should we embrace technology and make the best of its new promise, or should we (at the very least) pause and reflect on what this would entail for us as humans?

In his essay "The Human Prejudice", Bernard Williams defends what he calls ‘humanism’ (and what others call ‘speciesism’) and argues that species-membership is a morally relevant fact about us. Williams’ argument has been criticized by many. In the IGI Global article "In Defense of the ‘Human Prejudice’" , author Dr. Tatiana Patrone (Department of Philosophy and Religion, Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY, USA) focuses on the critics by providing a diagnosis of why such accounts seem to be so misguided. In short, the paper argues that there is nothing obviously wrong with being a speciesist.
