American Reference Books Annual (ARBA)In a follow-up to the Newsroom post featuring the IGI Global Educational titles selected for review in the 44th edition of American Reference Books Annual, we are pleased to announce the Library Science titles also selected. ARBA provides collection development and reference librarians with critical reviews of all print and online reference materials published in 2012. Each publication is reviewed by practicing academic, public, and school librarians who are familiar with the needs of libraries.

Congratulations to all of our contributors for the favorable review of your books! All of the titles are part of the Advances in Library and Information Science Book Series. Written by Sara Marcus and Laura J. Bender of ARBA, reviews of the Library Science titles follow:

Remote Access Technologies for Library Collections: Tools for Library Users and Managers

Diane M. Fulkerson (University of South Florida Polytechnic Library, USA)
These 12 chapters authored by the Social Sciences and Education Librarian at the University of South Florida Polytechnic in Lakeland, Florida discuss in easy-to-understand language the various issues relating to remote access for library collections. Beginning with an introduction to distance education and library services, Fulkerson next addresses meeting user needs, copyright, collection development policies, developing digital collections, technology for remote access, remote access and course management software, social networks and Web 2.0 tools, mobile technologies, and virtual libraries. […] This book is useful not only for librarians but also for anyone who serves distance students or patrons.

Partnerships and Collaborations in Public Library Communities: Resources and Solutions

Karen Ellis (Taylor Public Library, USA)
Edited by the director of the Taylor Public Library in Texas, this work brings together 16 chapters authored by 16 librarians in the United States along with one from Ireland and one from Nigeria. Intended for public libraries in particular, the chapters provide examples and cases of successful collaborations organized into four areas or types: with government and social service agencies, targeted to specific programs or populations, serving the incarcerated, and educational with a focus on preK-12. […] No matter the community one is serving or interested in reaching out to, urban or rural, educated or immigrant, or any other, there is information in here for ideas that will work in one's own unique setting.

Planning and Implementing Resource Discovery Tools in Academic Libraries

Mary Pagiliero Popp (Indiana University, USA) and Diane Dallis (Indiana University, USA)
Providing both practical advice and critical analysis of resource discovery tools’ use, implementation, and effectiveness in academic libraries, this volume offers theory and practical chapters, supporting librarians, administrators, and programmers in academic and specialized library settings who are considering and currently using resource discovery tools. […] As with most Information Science Reference books, there is a detailed table of contents and a compilation of references, making this volume user friendly and accessible.

Public Law Librarianship: Objectives, Challenges, and Solutions

Laurie Selwyn (Law Librarian [Ret.], USA) and Virginia Eldridge (Grayson County, Texas Law Library, USA)
Consisting of 10 chapters authored by two law librarians working as county law librarians, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the funding, organization, and governance related to serving in a public law library. With years of practical experience behind them the authors try to be as comprehensive as possible, including chapters on the patron base, how to organize the library, library management, hiring and staffing personnel, public relations, collection development, technology and electronic resources, technical services, and public services.

Library Automation and OPAC 2.0: Information Access and Services in the 2.0 Landscape

Jesus Tramullas (University of Zaragoza, Spain) and Piedad Garrido (University of Zaragoza, Spain)
The work is international in scope and includes chapters on the topics of creating rich and dynamic library catalogs, XML in library cataloging workflows, intelligent personal agents in Library 2.0 environments, library analytics in the Web 2.0 era, and Web 2.0 technology as a teaching tool. The goal of the editors is to bring new information to those researching library automation as well as those expanding their library automation systems.

Library Collection Development for Professional Programs: Trends and Best Practices

Sara Holder (McGill University, Canada)
Sara Holder of McGill University in Canada has compiled a valuable reference resource for students entering library science, for practicing librarians, and for professors of library science who must keep up with the latest trends and practices in the area of collection development (management). Holder and 35 contributors write about the evaluative process used by librarians to choose materials that support professional and/or applied academic programs. These practices differ from general collection development in that they must provide the most current resources for students who have to be certified, licensed, or tested to prove they are ready to join a specific profession. In addition, accreditation requirements for the programs must be met and often specify materials and resources needed (library holdings) to receive accreditation. Some of the professional and applied academic programs covered are theology/divinity, business, law, medicine, architecture, library science, design, engineering, and teacher education.

ARBAonline is the most comprehensive, authoritative database for quality reviews of print and electronic reference works.
