Dr. Sterling K. Carter Answers Our Questions
What is your professional background that gives you the knowledge needed to lead this publication?
Dr. Carter: I have worked in healthcare research, specifically EHR interoperability, for nine years. I have worked in process improvement for over a decade. I am a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt specializing in Lean healthcare.
What inspired you to write your book?
Dr. Carter: I have a passion for healthcare and streamlining processes. I enjoy making systems more efficient.
What is your mission for the title?
Dr. Carter: The title aims to promote a new strategy of health information exchange (HIE). Diseases have killed more people than all the world wars combined because they spread across multiple nations quickly. There is a gap in technology that must be addressed.
How is your research going to impact this field ?
Dr. Carter: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Health Assembly (WHA) promote a global approach to pandemic preparedness, promoting a global pandemic preparedness treaty. One of the tenets of pandemic preparedness is information-sharing interoperable systems. The population of the United States is approximately 4% of the worldwide population, but 17% of COVID-19 deaths have occurred in the United States. Immigration, travel, logistics, and wars are how diseases travel into nations. My research will hopefully increase awareness of the problem and promote investments in interoperable electronic health records.
Who is the publication intended for? Who ultimately will benefit from this title?
Dr. Carter: My book is intended for researchers, healthcare professionals, global health leaders, public health leaders, or anyone interested in improving global health systems.
What do you want people to know about your publication before they read it?
Dr. Carter: I want people to know that my book is intended to promote a proactive global approach to responding to pandemics and that the individual nation-state cannot fight disease alone.
How does your publication stand out from others like it?
Dr. Carter: To my knowledge, there are not many books, if any, that promote a globally interoperable EHR concept.
What are some future directions for your research?
Dr. Carter: My book addresses the need for a multinational EHR system; however, future research will address where to pilot the system. The BRICS nations and the Global South could benefit from a multinational EHR system.
What are other topic areas that your readership would find of interest?
Dr. Carter: My readership would be interested in learning that diseases, not wars, are the greatest threat to human survival. COVID-19 was a wake-up call, but in many ways, we’ve just hit the snooze button and returned to our blissful slumber, believing that everything will just work itself out.
Tell us about your experience with IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
