Can Virtual Reality Alter Human Mental State And Behavior?
Advances in the use of virtual reality (VR) programs for mental health therapy have opened a research avenue offering great opportunity to improve patient behavior. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated one in five people in the US have a diagnosable mental disorder. TechCrunch’s recent article Virtual Reality Therapy: Treating The Global Mental Health Crisis, points out that virtual reality has been used for decades as a tool for therapists to administer highly effective treatments without the use of drugs. VR sessions focus on a specific problem, helping the patient identify, recognize and change disturbing thought patterns that contribute to negative or destructive beliefs or behaviors. VR can safely simulate anxiety-causing stimuli in a safe, controlled environment, allowing therapists the ability to analyze the patient’s behavior and reaction.

In the IGI Global article “A Virtual Reality Study of Help Recognition and Metacognition with an Affective Agent,” the authors propose an original paradigm based on affective computing and virtual reality technology, requiring the assessment of helping intentions as well as self-monitoring metacognition. Overall, this study from the International Journal of Synthetic Emotions (IJSE) exemplifies the promising use of virtual reality settings for future studies in the medical psychology field.
