Noted IGI-Global Author, lecturer and Journal Editor Captain Kevin M. Smith met with LT. General Stephen L. Kwast USAF, Commander and President, Air University, USAF and his close aids. The meeting was held at the Pentagon, October 22nd, 2015. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss new and innovative ways to improve the performance of Airmen in complex situations, optimize performance of large scale military systems, shorten the combat engagement decision cycle, and foster innovation.

The Air University is at the leading edge in efforts to develop within the Force, advanced reasoning capabilities in order to seize opportunities in a rapidly changing operational environment and succeed in conflict. Built around the core principles of Critical Thinking and Performance Agility, the Air University is engaged in redefining the content and delivery of instructional material that targets higher-order skills.
The meeting was arranged by the American Leadership & Policy Foundation (ALPF), a uniquely positioned think tank that is organized to clarify complex situations and develop enduring solutions to many of the critical challenges facing our national security interests. The Chairmen of ALPF, David Stuckenberg, was also in attendance.

The United States Airforce is taking a leadership position in the movement away from an overreliance on technology, towards a more balanced multi-dimensional operating platform that focuses on agility, analytic reason, knowledge fusion, and innovation acting in concert with technology to achieve significantly higher levels of performance.

IGI Global is honored to assist the United States Airforce in important aspects of knowledge acquisition and delivery in a broad range of intellectual areas that target human understanding and performance. IGI Global is also proud to have an acclaimed and outstanding leader such as Captain Smith as part of our contributing staff.

Captain Kevin M. Smith is an aviator, author and speaker and a recognized expert in the field of critical thinking. Captain Smith’s distinguished military career included holding the positions of squadron commander deployed in the USS Constellation, senior instructor pilot, “top gun” instructor, and recognized expert in air combat operations. Captain Smith has over four thousand hours of military flight time, mostly in supersonic front-line fighters. During his airline career Captain Smith attained captain qualifications in all modern Boeing airliners, including the ultra-modern B-777. He was a line check captain in the B-767 Fleet. Over the course of a forty-year flying career, Captain Smith accumulated more than twenty-five thousand flight hours. Assigned as the chairman of a government sponsored blue ribbon task force, Captain Smith was directly responsible for the top-down redesign of airline pilot training programs for all U.S. airline carriers. This effort represented the first successful attempt to develop targeted training programs designed to improve the critical thinking skills for airline pilots. Captain Smith is the author of the Commitment to Reason four-book series which addresses critical thinking in new and innovative ways. Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, book one is available nationally, book two is in press and will be available in the spring of 2015. A companion workbook is also in production, and books three and four will be available in 2016. Captain Smith has received numerous military awards including the prestigious Meritorious Unit Commendation recognizing his exceptional performance as squadron commander. He holds degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics, and is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Aviation Academy.

Captain Smith is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Aviation Systems, Operations, and Training, published by IGI-Global. He is also Editor of the recent title Mission Adaptive Display Technologies and Operational Decision Making in Aviation, a comprehensive resource that explores the use of adaptive and assistive technologies in aviation to establish clear guidelines for the design and implementation of such technologies to better serve the needs of both military and civilian pilots. Benefiting from the authors’ combined experience of more than 40 years in the aviation industry and over 25,000 flight-hours, this volume targets a wide audience of engineers and business professionals. Captain Smith also took a leadership role in executing one of IGI Global's first Video Lecture Series: Intelligent Systems and the Age of the Superfunction. This video collection explores how the superfunction combines attributes that are organized in a powerful analytic framework to significantly improve mission success while simultaneously reducing complexity and excessively high workloads.
