The term "cloud computing" is relatively new. Internet-based distributing computing and its associated applications gained importance in the year 2007. It is apt to recall the Sun Microsystems' slogan: "The network is the computers." It is as good as describing how cloud computing works.

IT Professionals Focus

Managing cloud computing is all about horizontal scalability and technical challenge in developing operating systems and applications. The idea behind developing applications under cloud computing environment is that applications and data stored in the servers are available to a broad group of users across different enterprises and different platforms. Instead of focusing on the application, they concentrate on end users' requirements and how the application can be useful for them. It means the documents they create for end users.

Benefits to End Users

If the end user's system crashes, it does not affect either host applications or the documents. They remain unaffected in the cloud. Since documents are available in the host system, multiple users can collaborate on the same document in real time using any available internet connection. Documents are no longer machine centric. They are available to any authorized users.

Advantage to Enterprises

In the present globalization scenario, cloud services can provide speed, effectiveness and cost effective solution to enterprises. These benefits will enable enterprises to take advantage of this emerging technology.

Issues and Concerns

Data privacy poses a security threat. Since access to cloud computing resources will be remote, enterprises need to consider measures such as encrypting the data in the cloud.

Future Trend

It is simply a lot more efficient to share space on hundreds or thousands of cloud computers than to keep more servers for enterprises to store data. This is the real reason why cloud computing is likely to become ubiquitous. It provides more power and storage for less investment than any other current computing solutions.

Conclusion

New technologies generally appear at high speed in the market and disappear at the same speed. It is predicted that cloud computing is likely to have more longevity. There is good scope for carrying out research activities for developing business models for manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, and financial sectors.
