Dr. Gupta shares his thoughts on the importance of cyber security in the digital age

Combating Next-Generation Cyber Threats with Dr. Gupta

Living in the 21st century means that people have to use the internet in some way, shape, or form. The pervasiveness of technology makes it a tool that none can refrain from using. While new technologies are generally a positive force that can dramatically improve life, there are some security risks that come with them. From cyber terrorism to cyber bullying, recent incidents have shown that there is an increasing need to come up more efficient security measures to mitigate threats, which are getting more and more sophisticated. Dr. B. B. Gupta, co-Editor-in-Chief of the IGI Global journal, the International Journal of Cloud Applications and Computing (IJCAC), is a researcher and an expert on the subject matter. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts about the evolution of the internet and smart technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), and he also raised important questions as they pertain to the security, or lack thereof, of those technologies.

What inspired you to pursue research activities in your field?

My research interests include information security, web security, cloud computing, intrusion detection, OSNs Security, and Mobile security. I really enjoy solving technical challenges in these areas. The more I learn about the cyber world, the more excited I get about this field, which has provided me with an abundance of meaningful and cutting-edge work that I am passionate about. The opportunity to interact with the finest researchers from all over the world makes it even more interesting. Over the years, it has been a challenging but rewarding course of study.

Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?

Recently, there has been an explosive increase in the number of devices connected to the Internet, which has consequently led to a growing range of attack vectors and vulnerabilities on a global scale. The depth and volume of personal and corporate data online is increasing, which has made these attacks more rewarding for the attackers. Moreover, with the advent of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoTs), and Blockchain, the biggest concern we see today is a lack of security. Therefore, extensive research is required to meet this ultimate goal.

In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?

The Internet continues to create new businesses and social opportunities, forcing society to become increasingly dependent on it. Instances of organizations getting breached are becoming more common, so rather than playing blindfolded, it is important to build more secure networks. The research being done in this field ensures that proactive steps are taken against cyber threats. The community of users needs to feel confident about the technology they are using, which will only happen by improving the current security standards.

What are the future directions of your research areas?

As far as the future direction of my research areas is concerned, the focus will be on combating next-generation threats. Although predicting the exact nature of future threats and ways to combat them is a difficult task, it will offer a valuable return to society.

What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your industry or field over the past several months, and what would you say are some of the innovative research directions you foresee in the future? How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these innovations?

I think having critical-thinking skills is one of the major transitions I have observed in my field. Researchers are keen on moving from textbook research to real-world research. As far as some of the innovative research directions are concerned, any research problem can have multiple correct solutions, and the key job of the researcher should be not only to find the best technical solution, but also the most feasible solution based on other economic criteria such as market economics, technology expense, etc. This is really challenging because it is a skill that is not taught in any engineering curriculum. The era of inter-domain research is what I foresee becoming more relevant in the future.

Publications play a vital role in any field. Developing technical solutions involve a great deal of teamwork from researchers across different countries. People with similar research interests look up to each other’s work, and in this collaborative working environment, the publications motivate fellow researchers to explore and give them a spark of inspiration to shape their ideas, ask questions, and study the results.

What has your experience publishing with IGI Global been like?

A large part of a researcher’s life is spent reading, and my experience says that even the largest library becomes useless if it is not well arranged.
