DARPA Hires Batman and Robin

By IGI Global on Sep 24, 2010
DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is an agency of the United States Department of Defense, is taking on more new initiatives. With an impressive record of advanced technologies paired with snazzy acronyms, it makes sense that the new initiatives are called Biochronicity and Temporal Mechanisms Arising in Nature and Robustness of Biologically-Inspired Networks, or for short, BaTMAN and RoBIN. BaTMAN will strive to "develop an understanding of the relationship between biological systems and the spatial-temporal universe through the application of advanced principles from the physical sciences. RoBIN will seek to "apply the critical control features of biological networks to build unique models for adaptable networks, and create a dynamic biologically-inspired network of scientists and other experts for crisis response and complex decision support."

The agency would like to see BaTMAN's initiatives used to "transform biology from a descriptive to a predictive field of science." RoBIN would cover larger scale characteristics including group behaviors and complex adaptable networks.
