Databases Fight Terrorism

By IGI Global on Mar 26, 2013
Terrorism is a constant threat to the United States, and developing the best ways to research and collect materials to assist in countering this threat is essential. The US Terrorism Agency recently passed a controversial proposal establishing a huge database or dragnet of millions of records on United States’ citizens- even those not suspected of a crime.

According to the Wall Street Journal’s post “U.S. Terrorism Agency to Tap a Vast Database of Citizens,” not everyone was on board for this implementation. In the past, the agency was prohibited from storing information about citizens unless a person was a terror suspect or related to an investigation; however, recent tragedies have forced stricter policies as defense.

Databases can provide a different level of support in the war on terrorism. The Journal of Database Management features an article entitled “On U.S. Homeland Security and Database Technology” supporting the idea of making terrorist-related intelligence more precise and accurate. Efforts to arrest and deter terrorists, as well as track their supporters, movements, funds, and weapons, can be more precisely directed with the use of data gathered and stored in databases, as well as related technologies to query, search and mine the databases. This paper first reviews the difficulties in tracking terrorist suspects and their activities. It then examines how databases, and database-related technologies, can be used and made more effective in aiding the war against terror.
