The Decline of Academic Writing: Building a More Stable Foundation for Modern Research

Improving Scholarly Writing Of Graduate Students And Faculty Faculty and administrators in higher education know there is a widespread issue concerning the writing skills of undergraduate and graduate students. Difficulties with grammar, sentence structure, and organization occur in doctoral students who have already attained several degrees.

Collins of University of Arkansas, USA, confront this growing issue in their chapter "Creating a Support Structure for Academic Writing and Publication Support: The Rationale and Lessons Learned," from the title Handbook of Research on Scholarly Publishing and Research Methods, edited by Dr. Victor C.X. Wang.

This chapter discusses strategies and programs for the improvement of scholarly writing, provide insight into the kind of learning that can take place in a university writing center, and reflect on successes and missteps along the way. This chapter may be especially helpful to educators who seek to create similar offices or services at their own institutions.
