The Expense of Economic Energy

The Expense of Economic Energy Lately, nuclear energy seems to be a growing topic of discussion. Reactors are being built in countries such as Russia, India, and China. The European Union is implementing a nuclear energy deal with South Africa that will power remote areas of the country. Japan is strategizing routes to restart their nuclear power sources. In the wake of historical nuclear accidents including Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and most recently Fukushima, safety is the main public concern, as well as the financial costs associated with this carbon-free power source.

Bryan Walsh, senior editor at TIME Magazine, discusses this topic in his recent post, “Nuclear Energy is Largely Safe. But Can It Be Cheap?” He points out that accidents involving nuclear energy are rare, nor does it contribute to climate change created by humans. Walsh goes on to talk about the fiscal implications of nuclear energy, forming the conclusion that, “Nuclear can play a significant role in decarbonization, but it will only happen if atomic power isn’t expensive,” a point that will be especially significant for poorer, less-developed nations.

Assessment of Nuclear Energy Competiveness Using a Multi-Criteria Fuzzy Approach”, a recent IGI Global article written by Fausto Cavallaro of the University of Molise in Campobasso, Italy, focuses on the economic standpoint of nuclear energy. Cavallaro puts forth that, “Besides its social acceptance and the problem of handling radioactive waste, the economic appraisal of nuclear energy compared to coal and gas is the most controversial item in the current debate on energy resources.” While global discussions on the topic almost always include environmental and social factors, the approach used throughout this article excludes such criteria, aiming to cut out added uncertainties in the evaluation process.

This individual journal article, as well as numerous other publications, is available for purchase through IGI Global's InfoSci®-OnDemand, which allows full-text searching through our entire collection of thousands of research articles, book chapters, and teaching cases.

“Assessment of Nuclear Energy Competiveness Using a Multi-Criteria Fuzzy Approach” was published in the International Journal of Energy Optimization and Engineering (IJEOE), edited by Pandian Vasant of Petronas University of Technology in Malaysia, which provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the areas of energy systems and hybrid intelligent optimization.
