Experts Apprehensive About Cyber Crime in the New Year

By IGI Global on Jan 3, 2011
McAfee Labs has released a list describing what they foresee as the top cybersecurity threats for 2011. Not surprisingly, social media tops the list, as experts believe that cyber criminals will focus on sites like Twitter, Facebook, foursquare, and Gowalla, exploiting URL-shortening services, as well as location services.

Criminals can take advantage of abbreviated URLs to create dangerous links, as well as geolocation services, as many users willingly post their every move. McAfee also cites mobile devices, Apple platforms, and internet TV as potential cybercrime targets ( www.moneycontrol.com/news/technology/top-targets-for-emerging-threats_509086.html).

So what can users do about the plausible threats? IGI Global Editors Raghu Santanam, Arizona State University, USA, M. Sethumadhavan, Amrita University, India, and Mohit Virendra, Brocade Communications Systems, USA, say "Initiatives to strengthen security clearly benefit from well-designed policies that address developments in science & technology and collaborations between entities."

Their newest release through IGI Global, Cyber Security, Cyber Crime and Cyber Forensics: Applications and Perspectives, presents the most up-to-date and innovative scholarly research in the area of security, "the kind of multi-disciplinary research effort needed to address the wide range of challenges facing us today in the Information Age," describe the editors.

Recent developments in cyber security, crime, and forensics have attracted researcher and practitioner interests from technological, organizational and policy-making perspectives. Technological advances address challenges in information sharing, surveillance and analysis, but organizational advances are needed to foster collaboration between federal, state and local agencies as well as the private sector.

Cyber Security, Cyber Crime and Cyber Forensics: Applications and Perspectives provides broad coverage of technical and socio-economic perspectives for utilizing information and communication technologies and developing practical solutions in cyber security, cyber crime and cyber forensics.
