ALJ Logo Six of IGI Global’s library and information science, media and communications, and education titles were recently reviewed by The Australian Library Journal (ALJ), an essential vehicle for publishing scholarly research and one of the official journals of the Australian Library and Information Association. These titles were recognized in the most recent issue of the journal (Volume 62, Issue 2), and highlight the best practices and emerging technologies used in their respective fields. Below are excerpts from each of the reviews.

Blogging in the Global Society: Cultural, Political and Geographical Aspects, edited by Tatyana Dumova (Point Park University, USA) and Richard Fiordo (University of North Dakota, USA). Reviewed by Catherine Gilbert, Parliament of Australia Library:

Recommended- This collection of research writings from international scholars examines blogging from a variety of perspectives, ranging from empirical studies to discussions of philosophical issues related to blogging and blogs. After reading this book, blogs will never look the same again. Blogging is a worldwide occurrence and blogs are used for a variety of reasons, both significant points emphasized throughout. This volume is recommended to anyone with an interest in the impact of social media and blogging, whether bloggers themselves or not.”

Collaboration and the Semantic Web: Social Networks, Knowledge Networks, and Knowledge Resources, edited by Stefan Brüggemann (Astrium Space Transportation, Germany) and Claudia d’Amato (University of Bari, Italy). Reviewed by Toby Burrows of the University of Western Australia:

"The essays look at various ways in which the technologies associated with the Semantic Web can be harnessed to improve systems for knowledge-sharing and collaboration across organisations. The specialised topics addressed include data mining, named entity recognition, ontology alignment and engineering, the semantics of email, and the generation of knowledge from tags in social media and social networks. As well as discussing the underlying technologies, the contributors also look at strategies for integrating this kind of ‘semantic knowledge representation’ into organisational systems. They also examine specific organisational settings where these approaches are likely to be of particular relevance, including software development and business intelligence. This is a collection that is primarily intended for specialist researchers in computer science and knowledge management."

Collaborative Learning 2.0: Open Educational Resources, edited by Alexandra Okada (The Open University, UK), Teresa Connolly (The Open University, UK) and Peter J. Scott (The Open University, UK), and reviewed by Helen Nitschke, Australian International School:

“Action research, case studies, personal reflection on experience and formal reports, combined with such diverse topics as the study of architecture, engineering, professional development for teachers, open laboratory networks and learning a foreign language, are brought together in this text, ensuring that any reader with an interest in OERs will find the book thought-provoking. Collaborative learning 2.0: open educational resources is a useful resource for anyone wishing to explore the potential of OER and to gain insight into recent developments and experiences.”

Next Generation Search Engines, edited by Christophe Jouis (Universite Paris III, France and LIP6-Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, France), Ismail Biskri (Universite du Quebec A Trois Rivieres, Canada), Jean-Gabriel Ganascia (LIP6 and CNRS-Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, France) and Magali Roux (LIP6 and CNRS-Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, France); reviewed by Anne Sara, Sydney:

“This collection of 20 essays explores next-generation search engines, covering topics such as indexing, metadata, semantic models and search-engine interfaces. The essays offer a truly international perspective on developments in next-generation search engines. This book is comprehensively researched and detailed and is recommended for those involved in the development and implementation of information-retrieval models. It is also likely to be of interest to those wishing to learn more about next-generation search engines and the current trends in information-retrieval models.”

Partnerships and Collaborations in Public Library Communities: Resources and Solutions, edited by Karen Ellis (Taylor Public Library, USA). Reviewed by Sharon Uthmann, Bellingen Shire Council:

“With library funding continually under threat, it is timely to produce a resource providing ideas of how libraries can remain relevant through connecting to their communities. 18 contributors spanning a range of US state, local, educational, prison and governmental libraries, this collection provides readers with 14 examples of public libraries working with local organisations or institutions to connect with different communities. The content and examples provided are useful in providing public librarians with a better understanding of what might be possible for their unique requirements and limitations.”

Planning and Implementing Resource Discovery Tools in Academic Libraries, edited by Mary Pagliero Popp (Indiana University, USA) and Diane Dallis (Indiana University, USA). Reviewed by Helen Dunford, Tasmanian Polytechnic:

“This book includes a critical analysis of why discovery tools are gaining such wide acceptance in the marketplace despite their cost and their limitations. It also addresses the problems which will face the next generation of search tools and the associated metadata. Most intriguing is the promise offered by the option of adding a collection-browsing tool and promoting the value of serendipity in research. This book is a must have for every academic library intending to continue operating into the future.”
