Four Environmental Factors that Could Influence Breast Cancer

What if you could predict your future based on where you lived? What if your geographical location could tell you where you will be in five years, show how successful you will be and what connections you will establish? While location may not be able to predict your complete future, it can potentially predict one thing…cancer.

Reports state that breast-cancer related deaths have dropped 40 percent, but breast cancer is still claiming and changing lives. In the United States alone, 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. For years, researchers have studied the factors that influence and cause the development of breast cancer. Treatments are being invented and molecules are being studied to help with the early detection of breast cancer and find a cure. But what if it was as easy as pinpointing environmental factors that are influencing this development?

Doctors Akram Gasmelseed, associate professor at the College of Public Health and Health Informatics, and Ali H. Alharbi, assistant professor at Qassim University, Saudi Arabia, studied the relationship between geographic location and breast cancer. Through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), they surveyed disease and determined four spatial environmental factors that greatly impact trends in breast cancer rates.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, IGI Global is pleased to offer complimentary access to the impactful research contained within this article: “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Modeling Analysis and the Effects of Spatial Distribution and Environmental Factors on Breast Cancer Incidence.”
