2,100 Jobs to Be Cut by US Department of Education

The Future of Education in Jeopardy

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Mar 20, 2025
digitalWhat does the future of education in the US look like? In a recent announcement, the US Department of Education revealed plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 50 percent. Currently employing over 4,000 people, this reduction will result in the loss of about 2,100 jobs.

US President Donald Trump states that the purpose behind these cuts is due to the belief that the department has been “indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual, and political material.” President Trump has also been on record expressing an interest in removing the entire department. A statement has been made by Education Secretary Linda McMahon expressing that the purpose behind the cuts is to “better serve students, parents, educators, and taxpayers.”

Since 1979, the department has carried out a variety of tasks including student loans, formula funding, Pell Grants, grantmaking, and other functions. The cuts will impact all divisions of the department, though it is expected that essential functions will proceed as usual. Editor Prof. Bolapeju Mary Agboola discusses the theme of education system management in the book, Planning Tools for Policy, Leadership, and Management of Education Systems (ISBN: 9798369322529).

Planning Tools for Policy, Leadership, and Management of Education Systems distinguishes itself from other scholarly works through its innovative methodologies to address the often-overlooked weak link between education and sustainable national development. Exploring the comprehensive applications of planning tools and techniques in school management and improvement exemplifies and embodies the concept of "Publishing Tomorrow's Research Today" by presenting forward-thinking strategies that focus on underrepresented areas in educational policy, planning, and offer insights into strengthening data-driven strategies to navigate complex educational reforms effectively.”
