What Happens When Medical Treatment Turns Deadly?

By IGI Global Author Relations Team on Jun 28, 2017
Medical Errors A frail infant was given ten times the dosage of a medication and died five days later; a 79-year old took a paralytic instead of an antiacid and went into cardiac arrest; and 12-year old was given Ambien instead of an antibiotic and began to have destructive hallucinations--all of these cases happened inside the walls of hospitals and under the care of a medical professional.

When someone has an ailment, injury or medical difficulty they go to a medical facility, but what happens when their treatment turns deadly?

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, at least one death occurs from medication errors a day. These errors are responsible for 44,000-400,000 deaths annually inside homes and hospitals alike. Prof. Titilola T. Obilade speaks to the solution to combatting these statistics in “Medication Errors: The Role of Societal Attributes” which examines why medication errors occur and analyses the societal attributes of the event. The study focuses on the importance of communication between patients and the doctors and health literacy.
