IGI Global AI publications demonstrate the chronology of AI research around the world

IGI Global's Impact on the History of Artificial Intelligence Research

By IGI Global on Jul 17, 2018
Since the beginning of computer programming and the rise of the digital revolution, artificial intelligence technology has been an essential part of computer science research and development, with much of today’s extensive AI research takes place in Silicon Valley. The city, home to powerhouse companies such as Google and Facebook, has long been established as the heart of AI and computer science development, as well as a popular site for creators and developers. However, computer science and AI is quickly outgrowing the California area and spreading all around the globe as its significance continues to rise.

As stated by Dr. Francisco José García-Peñalvo from the University of Salamanca in his publication, Global Implications of Emerging Technology Trends, “The advent of new technologies has been an impetus for rapid development in several industries. These recent advances push industry leaders to infuse new innovations into their various systems and processes.” Innovation through artificial intelligence has led to regional development as cities that invest in the technology have started to grow and expand.

According to the New York Times, Cambridge is one region that is catching up to Silicon Valley. Housing “more than 4,500 high-tech firms [and] employing nearly 75,000 people,” Cambridge is beginning to invest into artificial intelligence technology. Government officials in the city have eagerly welcomed the technological boom, increasing university financing for education in computer science, while companies such as Google and Apple have grabbed local tech businesses and integrated them into their own teams.

The increase in tech companies in Cambridge has led to incredible economic growth, influencing other cities to follow in Cambridge's footsteps. Small towns have transformed into bustling cities, appealing to other business owners and investors. With artificial intelligence as such a major field of research, high salaries for developers and engineers are no longer uncommon and are making the field even more attractive to students. Due to the importance of artificial intelligence and technology, the demand for research in the field has increased. IGI Global has worked with researchers from Cambridge, as well as a wide variety of institutions and universities around the world, to provide innovative research in such a dynamic field.

Since 2002, IGI Global has consistently stayed abreast of the latest advancements and developments in computer science and artificial intelligence research, with 60 topics in computer science and over 6,000 publications focused on artificial intelligence. One of IGI Global’s first 2002 copyright year publications focused on artificial intelligence, titled Intelligent Support Systems: Knowledge Management, is written by Prof. Vijayan Sugumaran from Oakland University. The publication gathered research from related fields such as information systems, distributed artificial intelligence, intelligent agents, machine learning, and collaborative work to explore various aspects of IIS design and implementation, and to share experiences and lessons learned in deploying intelligent support systems. As stated by Dr. Sugumaran, “There is a growing interest in developing intelligent systems that would enable users to accomplish complex tasks in a Web-centric environment with relative ease…” This publication was IGI Global’s first step into the realm of artificial intelligence in computer science.

Once the technology became more widespread, artificial intelligence publications began exploring the effects artificial intelligence had on different industries and fields of research. In his 2009 publication, Information Technology and Societal Development, Prof. Andrew Targowski from Western Michigan University wrote, “Latent in the current environment of rapid technological advances are breakthroughs waiting to be discovered that will have profound impacts on how organizations will cope with the direction civilization is taking.” His publication examined the full range of impacts of information technology on civilization and the development of societies.

Eventually, AI research began to explore not only the technical aspects of it, but also the social. An example of this is one of IGI Global’s more recent artificial intelligence publications from the 2015 copyright year, the Handbook of Research on Synthesizing Human Emotion in Intelligent Systems and Robotics. Authored by Dr. Jordi Vallverdú from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the publication presents a close look at all the factors involved in modeling emotions and applying a thorough understanding of human emotional recognition to technology. According to ProtoView Book Abstracts (formerly Book News, Inc.), this publication "[covers] modeling emotions, the body as a space for emotions, emotional recognition and implementation, and recent trends in synthetic emotions." Containing chapters delving into topics such as synthetic emotions, human-robot interaction, and information processing, the publication appeals to active researchers in the fields of artificial emotions, artificial intelligence, computing, robotics, philosophy, and psychology. This publication also provides an important source of information for business owners and tech developers looking to compete in a growing field.

Dr. Tomayess Issa As artificial intelligence research became more common, academic publications started to focus on the more niche aspects of the field rather than overall perspectives. A recent example of this from IGI Global's 2015 copyright year is Artificial Intelligence Technologies and the Evolution of Web 3.0 by Dr. Tomayess Issa from Curtin University and Dr. Pedro Isaías from Portuguese Open University. Bringing together emergent research and best practices surrounding the effective usage of Web 3.0 technologies in a variety of environments, this publication "[covers] several topics in relation to Web 3.0, particularly Web 3.0 and technologies, e-learning and teaching, e-business, e-government, e-marketing and social networking, media, knowledge management, and Internet future," according to ProtoView Book Abstracts.

Building on an extensive foundation of artificial intelligence research publications, one of IGI Global’s forthcoming publications for the 2019 copyright year is centered on artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction is titled Advanced Methodologies and Technologies in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Simulation, and Human-Computer Interaction by Dr. Mehdi Khosrow-Pour from Information Resources Management Association. Dr. Khosrow-Pour wrote, “As modern technologies continue to develop and evolve, the ability of users to adapt with new systems becomes a paramount concern. Research into new ways for humans to make use of advanced computers and other such technologies through artificial intelligence and computer simulation is necessary to fully realize the potential of tools in the 21st century.”

Research in artificial intelligence will continue to spread and develop, advancing cities and businesses in all regions and affecting a wide range of industries and research fields. It is no longer a choice for whether institutions and governments will adopt the technology, but when they will catch up.
