IGI Global Editors Receive Award Granted by the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE)
IGI Global’s
Multilingual Writing and Pedagogical Cooperation in Virtual Learning Environments
Awarded "Enrique Alcaraz Research Award"
By
Brittany Haynes
on
Aug 28, 2019
Hershey, PA – August 27, 2019
– Recently, an IGI Global publication,
Multilingual Writing and Pedagogical Cooperation in Virtual Learning Environments
, edited by Prof. Birthe Mousten, from Aarhus Universitet, Denmark; Prof. Sonia Vandepitte, from Universiteit Gent, Belgium; Prof. Elisabet Arnó, from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain; and Prof. Bruce Maylath, from North Dakota State University, USA, has won the
7th Edition of the Enrique Alcaraz Research Award
. Given by the
European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE)
, this award is granted to the best research study on
Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP)
from AELFE members.
“The award of the book has spurred numerous questions about the importance of the field of telecollaboration and the impact of multilingual cooperation on language learning and acquisition of cultural awareness,” stated Prof. Birthe Mousten. “The contents of the book reverberate the requirements from not only professionals in trade and industry today, but also show ways to fulfill these requirements in educational contexts while, at the same time, supporting the habitus of the professionals in the language field.”
The award-winning publication, which was released in April of 2018, contains 15 chapters from the perspectives of international contributors from 12 different countries. It examines experiences with virtual networks and their advantages for universities and students in the domains of writing, translation, and usability testing. While featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as collaborative writing, project-based learning, and writing and translation practices, this reference book presents current research on multilingual writing and pedagogical cooperation in virtual learning environments.
“Winning the Enrique Alcaraz Award is an indication of the value of the research that we’ve been conducting for a couple decades now on what we call ‘cross-cultural virtual teams,’ which we assemble internationally to bring together students of writing and translation, and sometimes usability testing, to produce written documents in multiple languages,” added Prof. Bruce Maylath. “All of the book’s co-editors and about half of its contributors have done multilingual collaborative projects of this sort through the Trans-Atlantic & Pacific Project (TAPP).”
AELFE works to promote research and instructing in the field of LSP, and this is reflected by the “Enrique Alcaraz Research Award” (“Premio de Investigación Enrique Alcaraz”). This award is named for Dr. Enrique Alcaraz Varó, who focused his research on LSP and was known for leading English Studies in Spain. With an academic career as a lecturer at universities worldwide and his published works on applied linguistics and specialised translation, Prof. Alcaraz served as an inspiration for LSP research. Additionally, he left a legacy of progress in LSP in Spain, working to help make available a Translation and Interpretation Studies degree at the University of Alicante and helping to found the Instituto Interuniversitario de Lenguas Modernas Aplicadas (IULMA – Institute for Applied Languages).
“It is an immense honor to receive this research award, as this book grew out of our work on the TAPP. This recognition is one step forward and encourages us to further pursue work in this field. A step further (which may be evidence of synergy between virtual exchange and languages for specific purposes) is the organization of the 2nd TAPP Conference which will be precisely co-sited with the 19th AELFE Conference in 2020,” concluded Prof. Elisabet Arnó.
IGI Global would like to congratulate the editors of this publication on this accomplishment and for their dedication to continuing the advancement of research in multilingual writing and LSP.
