Metadata & Discovery Services Librarian at Wayne State University Awarded $500 Stipend

IGI Global Speaks with Amelia Mowry, Academic Sponsorship Recipient for ALA Annual, On the Changing State of Libraries

By IGI Global on Jul 11, 2013
Amelia Mowry AwardAt the 2013 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago, we had the opportunity to meet with IGI Global's Academic Librarian Sponsorship recipient, Amelia Mowry, Metadata & Discovery Services Librarian at Wayne State University, to get some feedback on the conference, as well as insight on the position of librarians today.

IGI Global: In your experience as a librarian, what are some of the most dramatic changes that have taken place in libraries?

Amelia Mowry: In my (admittedly short) experience, the major changes I see are all related to electronic resources. Electronic materials allow greater flexibility for our students. These e-resources allow for distance learning like never before. I'm also very excited about the digital availability of unusual or unique materials. These are the materials that wouldn't be published or accessible otherwise, such as special collections items and faculty or student work. This isn't just a technology change, but a fundamental shift for libraries and learning, where librarians can become the creators of these very local collections.

What can academic librarians do to better prepare for what is a somewhat uncertain future?

Learn to learn. What the library will look like in twenty years isn't clear, but I believe it will require a lot of flexibility on the part of librarians.

What can publishers do for academic librarians to better cater to their needs and the needs of their students?

I feel like there is a whole new relationship between publishers and librarians now that e-resources have come to the forefront. Now, maintenance of these materials requires an ongoing relationship. I appreciate it when publishers and vendors communicate upcoming changes and provide useful online help.

Does your library currently own any IGI Global products? If so, what is your reaction to our content? Have you found it user-friendly?

We do have IGI products. I'm a fan. I especially like the Library & Information Science materials. I'm still early in my career, but I would eventually like to publish materials like those.

Are you finding you are acquiring more on an individual title basis or are is Wayne State Library more geared towards bundles / collections?

We currently purchase a lot in packages but, like many libraries, we're still figuring out what method will work best for our users' needs.

Is this your first attendance to ALA? How has your experience impacted you as a librarian thus far?

This was my first-ever ALA. It was such a valuable experience for me. We metadata librarians can be rather spread out, so it was really helpful be able to talk to others and learn about new tools and methods.

Has your $500 stipend proven useful for your travels?

It really was essential. I've only been out of library school for a year. I haven't had much time to recover financially. I was worried I wouldn't be able to afford to go. IGI really helped me.
