The Importance of References and In-Text Citations

By Erin Watson on Jul 14, 2022
When submitting final versions of chapters and articles to publications, it is crucial to ensure references and in-text citations are present and accurate for all research contained within the work. Proper implementation of references and in-text citations marks a fully developed research work. As a full member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), IGI Global requires all submitted work to be fully referenced and thoroughly checked prior to publication to ensure all research is appropriately cited.
IGI Global understands it can be difficult to ensure all expectations are being met when submitting final versions of work for publication; due to this, our APA Citation Guidelines are available for review to guarantee the submission process is as simple as possible.

Why Citations are Important
Proper citations allow readers to further delve into the subject beyond just one publication. A manuscript’s list of references can assist other researchers in locating more quality scholarly papers for further reading within the field.
Proper citations further protect against plagiarism by clearly indicating and differentiating which information comes from other sources and which is your own work and writing. As a full member of COPE, IGI Global ensures that all contributors are following the highest ethical publication standards. As such, proper use of references and in-text citations is mandatory to protect contributors from plagiarism, accidental or otherwise.
Following a uniform style, such as the APA style guide, helps display your facts, key points, and scientific findings simply and clearly for your readers. Finally, by following a uniform style, the publication process is more efficient for author and publisher alike, allowing for the swift and accurate typesetting of your work.
In-Text Citations
In-text citations are used to show where you retrieved the information that you are using to make specific arguments in your writing. In the APA Publication Manual (7th edition), in-text citations are covered on pages 253-278.
Below are some general rules to follow when using in-text citations.
APA Citation Basics
When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998).
Note: In-text citations may NOT be indicated by bracketed numbers. If your in-text citations do not follow the author-date method, please correct them prior to submission.
If you are referring to an idea from another work but not directly quoting the material, or making reference to an entire book, article, or other work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication and not the page number in your in-text citation. All sources that are cited in the text must appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
Key Requirements
Additionally, there are a few key requirements to note before submission of any kind:
  • Non-English references must have an English translation
  • In-text citations must be in APA 7 format
  • Bracketed references are not usable

Contributors of IGI Global publications are encouraged to have their work professionally copy edited prior to final submission.
