One of the largest benefits of publishing under Open Access (OA) is that your work is published under a Creative Commons (CC BY) license, enabling your work to be freely and immediately available to the entire global community. According to Open Science, research that is published under OA receives up to an 89% higher download rate and the level of citation increases significantly compared to research that is published traditionally. Through this increase in downloads and citation, you not only increase the standing of your research but also make it more eligible for indexing within prestigious indices, including Web of Science™ and Scopus®.

By openly sharing your research, you can nominally increase its discoverability and impact. As the expert in the field of research, you can directly advocate for it and assist in identifying the best audience.

Critical Steps for Increasing the Discoverability of Your OA Research

  • Share the Journal’s Webpage: Share the webpage for the published research through your personal network, websites, social media, and more.
  • Recommend the Journal to Your Library: Recommend the OA journal to your librarian and ensure that they integrate the journal and IGI Global’s full collection of OA content into their holdings. This content is freely available and can be easily integrated through IGI Global’s InfoSci-Open database.
  • Share the Journal with Your Colleagues: Share articles and the full journal with your colleagues and research network to enable them to easily access and review the research.
  • Share the Journal on Social Media and ResearchGate: Widen your publication’s audience and discoverability by sharing direct links of your article on social media, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and upload it to websites like ResearchGate. Tag @IGIGlobal to be featured on IGI Global’s Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
  • Share the Journal with Relevant Associations/Organizations: Outreach to associations and organizations you are a member to share your recently published research. Having the backing of an association or organization can greatly increase the discoverability and, consequentially, the citation impact of a publication as well as more promotions surrounding your journal to a greater audience, additional collaborative opportunities, etc.
  • Share Your Published Work at Conferences and Events: Share the article and research at conferences or events you will be attending/presenting. Be sure to keep IGI Global informed of your events that you are attending/presenting at, as our team can provide additional materials for you to share.
  • Integrate Your Published Work Into Your Course Syllabi: Integrate your article and the journal into your course syllabi as recommended or required reading. As it is published under OA, it is freely available to your institution and students.
  • Integrate Your Published Work Into an Institutional Repository or Subject Repositories: Share your published work in your institutional repository and freely share it with other subject-specific repositories that you regularly access.
  • Connect Your ORCID iD and Other Scholarly Accounts: Be sure that your ORCID iD is linked to your OA work, as well as feature it on your other scholarly accounts, including Researcher, ResearchGate, and more.

For Editors: Be sure to share these actions with contributing authors, as these actions will not only assist in maintaining/increasing indexing but also assist in increasing the overall submissions to your journal. Be sure to share the Call for Papers through these actions in conjunction with sharing the content of your OA journal.
