Industry Professionals + Research Students = Innovation in Biomedical Engineering

By IGI Global on Aug 6, 2010
Studies of biomedical technologies and devices at the University of Buffalo have found a new platform in which to be shared. National Grid, an energy provider company catering to the Northeastern U.S., has invested $250,000 into developing an interactive system between industry and academia, called the Access Grid. The Access Grid will provide University of Buffalo's biomedical engineering students with a direct link to western New York's biomedical engineering industry, and the practitioners will have primary access to the latest biomedical research and upcoming scientists.

"The effort to promote partnerships between the university and area industry is an appropriate investment that will provide long-term benefits for the community, our customers, UB and our company," explained Tom King, the president of National Grid in the U.S. Continuous videoconferencing, as well as interactive virtual environments, will allow students and professionals to collaborate as they conduct experiments and research.

The University of Buffalo's Biomedical Engineering department focuses on innovations in medical advances through the study and creation of latest technologies, therapies, and tools. "This grant to support the work of UB biomedical engineering will be a powerful catalyst…" remarked Harvey G. Stenger Jr., dean of UB's Engineering School ( www.buffalo.edu/news/11290).

One of the latest references on medical technologies and biomedical engineering has been recently released by IGI Global. Intelligent Medical Technologies and Biomedical Engineering: Tools and Applications, edited by Dr. Anupam Shukla and Dr. Ritu Tiwari, both professors at the ABV- Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, India, provides researchers and practitioners, such as the Access Grid participants, with the latest developments and technologies available in the field.
