Innovation through Collective Intelligence

In a time when innovation is necessary to keep companies moving forward, but spending money is impossible when budgets are being constantly and closely watched, some businesses are looking for new methods to find the best ways to run more efficiently. Pitney Bowes, a company that produces mail-sorting equipment and postage scales, went to its full body of employees, instead of management only or outside researchers, to find ways to improve customer satisfaction. The ideas of the employees were implemented, and it turned out that the day-to-day experience of its workers had truly led to a better understanding of its consumers; customer satisfaction rose almost immediately. Pitney Bowes executives didn't just use a suggestion box to gather the employee suggestions, though.

The company used a program called Idea Central, a collective intelligence software tool, in order to most efficiently gather the employee ideas. Instead of using a time-consuming survey process, Idea Central helped Pitney Bowes to implement new suggestions in only days. The market for collective intelligence tools is estimated to be growing 15% - 30% per year, and companies are continually adopting these tools in increasingly creative ways to improve company efficiency while motivating employees by allowing them to become more involved with the company. Many other large companies are implementing similar tools and processes, including AT&T, Cisco Systems, Electronic Arts, Wal-Mart Stores, and MetLife. As collective intelligence becomes a more important part of business industries, there is a growing need for research in this area. In order to fulfill this need, IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, presents one of its newest journals, the International Journal of Organizational and Collective Intelligence (IJOCI) (Editor-in-Chief Hideyasu Sasaki, Ritsumeikan University and Keio University, Japan). This journal focuses on computing theories and empirical analyses of shared knowledge relevant to businesses. Containing both practical and theoretical articles on the technical and managerial aspects of intelligent computing, this journal reflects on current advancements in a variety of areas including knowledge computing, decision science, organizational systems, and robotics.International Journal of Organizational and Collective Intelligence

The mission of IJOCI is to provide researchers and practitioners in the communities of computer and information sciences with a forum to advance the practice and understanding of computing theories and empirical analyses for realizing "organizational intelligence and collective intelligence", i.e., intelligent computing for organizational and collective information from not only technical but also institutional and social aspects. This double-blind, peer reviewed journal has been published quarterly since January 2010.
