Dr. Zhengguo Sheng shares his insights about new trends in information and communication technology

The Inside Scoop on 5G and a Future of Hyperconnection with Dr. Zhenggou Sheng

By IGI Global on Mar 29, 2018
Dr.Sheng A world where everything communicates with everything is pretty much a reality today. From smart homes to self-driving cars, technological advances are being made almost on a daily basis. One particular researcher who is contributing to drive such advances is Dr. Zhengguo Sheng from the University of Sussex, U.K. In an effort to highlight industry leaders and their research, IGI Global conducted an interview with Dr. Sheng, Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Vehicular Telematics and Infotainment Systems (IJVTIS). An avid professor and researcher, he spoke about his new co-edited journal and the development of 5G and the future of the Internet of Things.

What inspired you to pursue research activities in your field?

The inspiration is driven by my Master project that I conducted with my Ph.D. supervisor in 2006. The research topic was about cooperative communications in wireless sensor networks, which was a joint project between the U.K. and the U.S. This was my first experience in carrying out novelty study. My supervisor gave me lots of guidance and support, also I had many opportunities to work with world class researchers from the U.K. and the U.S. The learning process when your research idea is being proposed, criticized, improved and finally accepted as a publication work is something that I really enjoy.

Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?

My research areas in wireless communications and networking fall in the big scope of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), which is very important to connect humans and things in a seamless and efficient way and enable more knowledge sharing and development on a global scale. The upcoming 5G evolvable technology will transform the ways people are communicating, working, transporting, shopping, and living, as it will also stimulate the application of other technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of Users?

One of my current research projects in vehicular communications can improve the connectivity and reliability of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications and is placed as a foundation of intelligent mobility to support advanced and safer vehicles.

What are the future directions of your research areas?

My future research directions will be focusing on connected vehicles and IoT. I am very passionate about the new development of Automotive-IoT by merging these two verticals together.

What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your industry/field over the past several months and what would you say are some of the innovative research directions you foresee in the future? How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these innovations?

Emerging new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, and new challenges, such as security, will certainly be worthwhile to investigate in my future research endeavors and publications.

What has your experience publishing with IGI Global been like?

Publishing with IGI Global is a great new experience, especially because of its easy and friendly submission and editorial processes. The new International Journal of Vehicular Telematics and Infotainment Systems (IJVTIS) that we have established with IGI Global is exactly aligned with those new research trends that I mentioned above, and it offers researchers a frontier platform to show their research findings.

IGI Global is grateful for the opportunity to work with Dr. Sheng and we look forward to seeing the growth of his journal, International Journal of Vehicular Telematics and Infotainment Systems (IJVTIS). We would like to thank Dr. Sheng and his Co-Editors-in-Chief, Dr. Daxin Tian, Beihang University, China and Dr. Jianming Ma, Texas Dept. of Transportation, United States, in ensuring IJVTIS continues to cultivate quality knowledge innovation in Information and Communication Technology.
