How Governments Are Responding to Global Disasters

Navigating the Storm

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Feb 13, 2025
digitalGiven the ongoing global state of disaster, how are governments handling this constant state of crisis? From the series of earthquakes in Greece to the wildfires in California, officials worldwide are responsible for ensuring that those affected receive the necessary resources and funding to address the effects of these emergencies.

In every state, the government plays a critical role in how these disasters are handled. For example, government officials can influence levels of funding and emergency response rates. Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) should no longer be responsible for managing disasters, proposing instead that state governments take on the task of handling emergencies.

To improve disaster management, many have turned to AI to assist in all phases, from mitigation to recovery. With certain technology already set in place for emergency response, many have found that adding AI to this software can help identify vulnerabilities and pattern recognition. For more information on this topic of AI in disaster response, editor Dr. Victor Hugo C. de Albuquerque provides valuable insights in his book, Novel AI Applications for Advancing Earth Sciences (ISBN: 9798369318508).
