Since 2016, the spotlight on misinformation has been growing with “fake news” stories and the emergence of deep fakes (where someone in a video can be replaced with someone else’s likeness through artificial intelligence), and media platforms are trying to find a comprehensive solution to stop the spread of this misinformation.
Although some solutions are being implemented, including Facebook’s program to hire third-party fact-checkers, the rapid pace of the production of an advanced form of misinformation is making it nearly impossible to identify fact from fiction. In response to this, The New York Times and IBM are partnering to provide a more comprehensive solution through blockchain. Titled The News Provenance Project, this project will put images and multi-media on blockchain to identify if they have been altered in any way to help internet users understand how the information they are viewing ended up there and if it is from a reliable source.
Recognizing the critical nature of understanding, identifying, and preventing misinformation in the media, IGI Global recently released the Handbook of Research on Deception, Fake News, and Misinformation Online. Edited by Prof. Innocent E. Chiluwa, from Covenant University, Nigeria, and Prof. Sergei A. Samoilenko, from George Mason University, USA, this publication provides very comprehensive perspectives on the recent research surrounding this trending area and offers many practical solutions and case studies on the latest deception-detecting methods, as well as character assassination, and political deception, outlining scenarios in which this emerging blockchain technology could be applied.
This publication is currently available both in print (ISBN: 9781522585350) and electronic (EISBN: 9781522585374) format through IGI Global’s Online Bookstore at a 20% discount, and is featured in IGI Global’s InfoSci®-Books database (5,300+ e-books).
