“Opportunity” Knocks for Artificial Intelligence

By IGI Global on Jun 25, 2010
Opportunity, one of the rovers on Mars designed and run by NASA, is making some exciting new advancements. The rover has recently been given an artificial intelligence software update that allows it to think and make some of its own decisions. The software, which was developed over the course of six years, is called Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science, or AEGIS.

In the past, the rover had to stop after finding and analyzing an object and wait for further instructions from scientists on Earth. This process was time consuming, and much of Opportunity's potential search and analysis time was taken up by waiting for directions. Now, it can make decisions about where to go and what to analyze based on pre-programmed instructions from the NASA scientists. This extra independence may help to save time and therefore send greater amounts of useful information back to Earth. Opportunity is still programmed to analyze certain specific things, like rocks of a particular shade or size, so NASA scientists continue to be assured that they are getting the information they need. If this software works well for Opportunity, NASA may be able to apply similar ideas to future rovers ( www.informationweek.com/news/government/info-management/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=224200482).

IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, is making great strides in fulfilling the need for research publications covering this subject area. One of their newest releases, Soft Computing Methods for Practical Environment Solutions: Techniques and Studies, (edited by Marcos Gestal Pose and Daniel Rivero Cebrián, University of A Coruna, Spain) addresses the many applications of soft computing, such as artificial intelligence. In these ever-growing related fields, the push is constant to create an artificial being that can replicate human intelligence. While software like Opportunity's AEGIS still relies heavily on pre-programmed human instruction, soft computing strategies are constantly making this goal more realistic. Dr. Marcos Gestal Pose, the editor of this publication, contends that, "soft computing techniques could be considered a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) focused on the design of intelligent systems able to operate properly with inaccurate, unclear and/or incomplete information. This property enables [scientists] to approach real problems in order to find more reliable, manageable and less expensive solutions compared to those obtained by means of conventional techniques."

Soft Computing Methods for Practical Environment SolutionsThis comprehensive volume, full of the contributions of dozens of global experts, covers a variety of soft computing applications, ranging from industrial applications to biomedical approaches to natural environment applications. As a complement to this book, IGI Global offers the opportunity to subscribe to the International Journal of Synthetic Emotions (IJSE). This journal addresses topics related to how synthetic emotions may be produced and used in artificial beings and devices. This unique subject matter provides a forum for the advancement of synthetic emotion knowledge to scientists, synthetic agent designers, students, researchers, and those in the fields of psychology and philosophy.
