What Can Be at Risk to Switching Online?

Is In-Person Learning a Thing of the Past?

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Jan 23, 2025
digitalAs education continues to shift toward online platforms, many are concerned about what could be left behind. Online learning can include several advantages such as lower costs and reduced time commitments, but this shift may not be the best option for all students. Despite these benefits, the concern toward building equitable learning environments in these digital platforms linger.

Research indicates that approximately 69% of colleges are prioritizing the development of online versions of their traditional in-person courses for the upcoming academic year. Additionally, around 65% of institutions plan to offer virtual versions of entire degree programs that were previously available only in-person. This change could offer advantages for some learners, but it also poses a challenge in maintaining accessible and inclusive learning environments for students from all backgrounds. To discuss more on this shift toward online education, chapter author Dr. Youmei Liu provides valuable contributions in the book, Designing Equitable and Accessible Online Learning Environments (ISBN: 9798369302682).
