“Practice” Makes Perfect: Nursing Students Receive Grant to Improve Clinical Practice Skills

By IGI Global on Nov 1, 2010
Nursing students at the University of Louisville received a special gift this week. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration presented the School of Nursing with a $792,000 grant to expand their nursing informatics program. The money will help to expand the nursing simulation lab, adding a patient simulator, advanced software, and an electronic health record simulator. The lab will also include a technology specialist to oversee the implementation of critical nursing technologies, that today's nursing students need to utilize. "Today, nurses must be able to process a tsunami of patient data in order to make sound, clinical decisions," explained Marcia Hern, Ed.D., CNS, R.N., dean of the School of Nursing and principal investigator on the project. "This grant gives us the tools we need to prepare our students for this 21st century approach to nursing care and to help our faculty and UofL practicing nurses keep their skills current" ( www.news-medical.net/news/20101004/UofL-School-of-Nursing-awarded-24792000-grant-to-develop-nursing-informatics-education.aspx).

"Frontiers of information use and management in nursing to support clinical practice and research are being pushed further than ever before." – IGI Global Editors Dr. Andrew Cashin and Robyn Cook

In an effort to meet the research demands set forth by the University of Louisville and other institutions, IGI Global is releasing, Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing Informatics: Concepts and Applications.

The book serves as a valuable asset for nurses, administrators and practitioners who want to improve their grasp on technological advancements, such as the ones being taught at the University of Louisville. Critiquing fundamental concepts such as evidence based practice, and examining possible applications of such concepts in the contemporary context of nursing informatics, this text offers chapter and case studies focusing on technology's contributions to nursing theory and practice, nursing systems management, and decision-support in nursing.

Editors Andrew Cashin, (Southern Cross University, Australia) and Robyn Cook (Sidra Medical & Research Center, Qatar), see the importance of the merger between practice and theory to develop highly efficient nurses. Specifically, nurses who can fully utilize the latest technological advancements to best treat patients.

They explain in their preface that, "many of the ideas presented challenge the reader to really become mindful of what they think and know of nursing, the language used and the origins of the words, and how this thinking and speaking is channeled into practice. The tools of informatics are tools of communication and practice and come into this musing at the level of communication and practice."
