Providing a Voice for the Voiceless

Imagine a world with no orphans, where everyone is one joint community...one family.

Historically, in Africa, there exists an underlying principle of “I am because we are” or the understanding that every individual and orphaned child belongs to the community. But this practice has become difficult as HIV and AIDs, poverty and westernization consume the continent. Those who take on extra children are faced with worsening poverty. Children in the continent are faced with parents who die from a disease, abusive environments and the inability to afford education.

According to the United Nations, all children are “entitled to grow and develop in health; to this end, special care and protection shall be provided with both to him/her.” With this mission in mind, UNICEF was created, and the international community responded to this crisis.

But what happens when countries do not have the tools or support to provide for children in need?

Dr. Racheal Mafumbate, from the University of South Africa, highlights the challenges children in underdeveloped countries are facing. She explains the needed tools for positive child development and how niche tasks are helping them survive.

In honor of Universal Children’s Day, “Child Resilience, Survival, and Development: Voices of Orphans in Zimbabwe” is available for free access.

This chapter was also featured in Global Ideologies Surrounding Children's Rights and Social Justice. This publication highlights the trials and tribulations that children have often had to overcome to be considered true citizens of their communities.
