Christiansen shares his publishing experience with IGI Global and reflects on the evolution of business research.

#ResearchThroughtheDecades: Looking Back at Eight Years of Research with Bryan Christiansen

By Sharlene Oong on Sep 5, 2018
Producing innovative and groundbreaking research has been IGI Global’s specialty for 30 years. Established in 1988, the international academic publisher has worked in close collaboration with industry-leading research experts and professionals from prestigious institutions, such as Harvard University, University of Cambridge, Tsinghua University, and more. Among IGI Global’s esteemed contributors is Mr. Bryan Christiansen, from Global Research Society, LLC, who has worked with the international academic publisher for eight years and has taught at universities in Russia, Turkey, and the United States. He has published a total of 26 publications with IGI Global. In a recent interview with IGI Global, Mr. Christiansen shares his enthusiasm for his long line of research.

Among your publications, which would you say is your favorite, and why?

My favorite reference book among the 26 I have already developed for IGI Global is my first one titled, Cultural Variations in Business Performance: Contemporary Globalism, which is included in the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index. This work is the one that influenced nearly all my other books, especially the second one, Cultural and Technological Influences on Global Business, which can be found in Scopus (along with many of my other titles). Both of these works were highly instrumental in the eventual development of my Cultural Indoctrination Theory which was published in the International Journal of Productivity Management and Assessment Technologies (IJPMAT) in 2016. I will present this theory at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts on October 1st, 2018 as it relates to international business. Other universities outside the US are also interested in my theory that, again, is largely the outcome of my first book.

What were your main challenges of conducting your research?

The primary challenge for at least some of my research has been obtaining qualified references because most of my work involves cultural studies. While this field is certainly not new, successfully integrating issues such as cultural dimensions, intercultural competence, cultural anthropology, and cross-cultural communication into applied business and economics subjects remains relatively untouched but quite in demand by university courses. This can be easily verified simply by examining degree and course outlines in business schools just about anywhere, as well as some other degree programs such as psychology and sociology.

In your opinion, how have your publications been received by the academic community?

As mentioned above, most of my publications are Scopus or Clarivate Analytics Book Citation indexed. This basically means the message I have been trying to send in my work is being well-received by the academic community worldwide. I have recently noticed in my Scopus record that the number of citations of my work with IGI Global has increased to include professional journals as well as books. Some of the journals are Open Access which helps increase the reach and awareness of my publication efforts.

Where do you see your recent publications in a few years in comparison to your initial academic work?

My recent work shall remain a reflection and extension of my initial academic work, especially with regards to cultural variations and contemporary globalization. One specific example is the chapter I wrote for the just published, Economic and Geopolitical Perspectives of the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eurasia, titled, “ The Effects of Globalization on the CIS and Eurasia.” This chapter consists of many of the issues I have included in my previous works such as productivity, competitive advantage, management, cultural studies, and the growing global skills gap.

What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your research field of business in the past year?

Three trends easily come to mind: multigenerational management and leadership, disruptive technologies such as 3D metal printing or robotics, and new business education strategies. In fact, I currently have a book proposal on the first topic pending at IGI Global and am now preparing proposals for the other two topics.

How have you seen IGI Global evolve throughout your academic career?

The most significant accomplishment has been the company’s recent membership in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), a committee which provides leadership in thinking on publication ethics, practical resources to educate and support members, and offers a professional voice in current debates. The other main accomplishment is the development of the book and journal submission systems or the eEditorial Discovery system. As this is a customized submission system, it has developed into a tool that has improved greatly and has made the publication development process much easier than before.

What has your experience been like publishing with IGI Global?

Since I began working with the company in July of 2010, I can say the experience has been very good and is becoming even better with each passing year. I plan to publish with IGI Global well into the future.
IGI Global is grateful for the opportunity to work with Mr. Bryan Christiansen and we look forward to seeing more collaboration that will result in publications of invaluable content.
