Hear from the Expert:

Dr. Robert Elliot Davis Discusses the Benefits of Leading a Full Gold Open Access Journal

By Cheyenne Heckermann on Sep 23, 2021
Across the industry, many agree that publishing research under open access (OA) has continued benefits for all parties, including the acceleration of citation impact, increased indexing potential, increased discoverability, and a higher availability of the research. However, between the limited funding opportunities coupled with the lack of standardization across the industry, it can become an extreme challenge for researchers to submit their papers and lead OA resources, as they face increased article processing charges, understanding the various licensing models, decoding the types of OA (green, gold, diamond, platinum, black, etc.), and navigating what is a quality
OA resource.
To assist in understanding the complexity of OA and ultimately the benefit of leading an OA journal, Dr. Robert Elliot Davis, from Walden University, USA, discusses his experience in switching his IGI Global journal, International Journal of Standardization Research (IJSR), to a full gold OA journal. How did you come to publish with IGI Global?
Dr. Davis: My journey to publishing through IGI Global began in 2004 when I decided to document my professional objectives using paper and pen. Within the list was the aim to have a textbook distributed to higher education institutions. Retrospectively, I was inspired to author a nonfiction publication enhancing the reader's knowledge while alleviating known misconceptions regarding assessing information technology (IT) after reviewing the current state of material addressing the processes followed by information systems auditors.
After completing my doctoral studies and reviewing various academic publisher websites, I decided that IGI Global would be the best publisher for an academic book that would fulfill my desire to get my manuscript in the hands of professionals as well as students. During the publisher selection process, the first consideration was promotional advertising indicating educational institutions as an IGI Global target market. The second consideration was the ease of proposal submission. The third consideration was proposal turnaround time.
How have you been finding new collaborations with editors at IGI Global?

Dr. Davis: Through the updated IGI Global Publishing System, I found collaborations with editors easy to perform using the IGI Global eEditorial Discovery® system.

Is there anything different about becoming an Editor-in-Chief of an OA journal compared to a standard journal?

Dr. Davis: A standard academic journal is a periodical publication in which scholarly content relating to a particular academic discipline is published. Academic journals serve as permanent and transparent forums for the presentation, scrutiny, and discussion of research. There appears to be no significant difference from performing the Editor-in-Chief duties for a standard or OA journal at IGI Global, where the standard journal uses a subscription model, and the OA journal uses a researcher funding model. As an Editor-in-Chief of a journal with IGI Global, you are responsible for:

  1. Organizing and maintaining an editorial review board
  2. Recruiting quality research manuscript submissions for the journal
  3. Utilizing a minimum of three Editorial Review Board Members and one Associate Editor in conducting a double-blind peer review on each manuscript through the IGI Global Journal Online Submission System (eEditorial Discovery®)
  4. Collecting and organizing final materials for each issue and sending the completed issue materials to the IGI Global Journal Development Department
How have you seen your field evolve over the years you have published with IGI Global (specifically since IGI Global converted 30 journals to OA in January, one of which is your new journal)?

Dr. Davis: In the last 30 years, academic journal publishing has transitioned from paper typesetting to electronic encoding formats. Business models are different in the electronic encoding environment than the paper typesetting environment. Nevertheless, OA and standard journal manuscripts sometimes receive funding by the author paying an article processing charge, thereby shifting publication fees from the acquiring readers to the researchers or their funding source. Moreover, electronically formatted journal licensing has become common. Another critical transformation is OA journaling via the Internet. With OA publishing, a journal article is made available free to read by all accessing the web page by the publisher at the time
of publication.

What has your experience been like publishing with IGI Global overall?

Dr. Davis: Overall, my publishing experience with IGI Global was pleasant. The IGI Global Journal Development Team supplied the necessary guidance to ensure a publishable manuscript.

What inspired you to become editor-in-chief for the IJSR?

Dr. Davis: Academic journal contributions can be inconsistent in voice, style, or format. My inspiration manifested through the opportunity to apply my understanding of organizational goals, content strategy, and style guidelines. Moreover, I received inspiration by the belief that I can help unify standards and standardization content from various contributors with the assistance of the journal's editors and development team that may have a significant effect on organizations and societies. Consequently, I foresaw making the IGI Global IJSR webpages and overall online presence more cohesive and trustworthy. Furthermore, I envisioned ensuring that accepted journal content on the IJSR webpages meets IGI Global publication goals and aligns with the organizational strategy.

What is your mission for the IJSR?

Dr. Davis: The primary mission of the IJSR editors is to publish research findings that will advance knowledge relating to standards and standardization for diverse settings and applications. The IJSR aims to be an authoritative reference source and a prime outlet for scholarly information within the standards and standardization research community. By focusing on emerging research and trends in this field, the IJSR targets researchers, scholars, policymakers, managers, and practitioners from for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and decision-makers.

What are some of the benefits of your research to its community?

Dr. Davis: Continuously applying the IT audit system perspective can induce a positive social change that may include increased trust and reduced costs for IT use. Errors, mistakes, omissions, irregularities, or illegal acts can negatively affect stakeholder satisfaction when an incident results in information tampering, financial fraud, or access denial. Enterprise managers can improve trust for stakeholders in technology containing personally identifiable information through effectual IT audits. IT operational assurance can benefit communities through governance quality enhancement, increasing confidence, and reducing costs from
IT use.

What do you believe the benefits of OA publications are to the research community?

Dr. Davis: Founded in 1988, IGI Global, an international academic publisher, is committed to producing the highest quality research (as an active full member of the Committee on Publication Ethics "COPE") and ensuring the timely dissemination of innovative research findings through expeditious and technologically advanced publishing processes. Through COPE's commitment to supporting the research community ahead of profitability, and taking a chance on virtually untapped topic coverage, IGI Global has been able to collaborate with over 100,000+ researchers from some of the most prominent research institutions around the world to publish the most emerging, peer-reviewed research across 350+ topics in 11 subject areas including business, computer science, education, engineering, social sciences, and more. Whereby OA publishing enables enhanced exposure and less costly knowledge acquisition by the research community.

How is your journal different than others within your field (specifically as open access)?

Dr. Davis: The IJSR presents the latest research related to standards and standardization in organizations and societies of all types. When published, the journal’s manuscripts offer theoretical perspectives, empirical research, and real-world case studies and examples. IJSR articles supply essential reference sources for professionals, graduate-level students, and researchers across industries and communities.

What are some future directions for your research and the future of OA?

Dr. Davis: As the new IJSR Editor-in-Chief, my objective is to disseminate high-quality research that permits inducing social change. I see the IJSR as a publication that supplies discussions on standards and standardization -- possibly as an idea, an application, an experiment, or a critique. I invite scholars to generate a forum to share perspectives on submitted standards and standardization articles. With the acceleration of technology combined with diverse ways of establishing standards and standardization, many exciting options exist for publishing scholarly OA articles.

What are other areas that your readership would find of interest?

Dr. Davis: Standards and standardization are interdisciplinary subject matter. My readership may find interest in the IT, Stakeholders, Management, and Processes research presented in the IJSR OA articles.

This journal is currently seeking original contributions focused on theoretical perspectives, empirical research, and real-world case studies and examples of standards and standardization in organizations. If interested in submitting an article manuscript to IJSR for consideration, you can begin the submission process through our eEditorial Discovery® system.
As a gold open access journal, an Article Processing Charge (APC) is required; however, the APC will not be requested until AFTER the article manuscript has undergone the full double-blind peer review process and is accepted into the journal (Note: If an article manuscript is rejected, there will be no APC fee requested). The APC fee, US $750, paid directly to IGI Global by either the author or a funding body, offsets the costs associated with publishing an article under OA. IGI Global does have various options available for those who may encounter difficulties securing OA funding. Learn more through our Open Access webpage.
Additionally, to assist researchers in affordably publishing under OA, IGI Global offers their OA Fee Waiver (Read & Publish) Initiative, which provides 100% OA article processing charge waivers and the opportunity to access all of IGI Global’s peer-reviewed e-books and e-journals.
