Service Delivery Creates Jobs for Hundreds in the Technical Profession
By
IGI Global
on
May 25, 2010
In a time of economic upheaval, service delivery is a focal point for companies and is creating job placement for hundreds. In a competitive market, meeting the demands of consumers is crucial. On May 17, 2010, IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced it will open a new technology service delivery center in Columbia, Missouri, creating as many as 800 technical professional jobs. The debut of this center follows the recent opening of two other North American service delivery facilities in Dubuque, IA and Lansing, MI. The new center will support IBM's U.S. strategic outsourcing clients, providing server systems operations, security services and end-user services, including maintenance and monitoring of computer hardware and software systems. The hundreds new employees will manage the servers and storage systems that are critical for assuring optimal IT infrastructure performance for IBM's clients. IBM is relying heavily on institutions of higher learning in the Columbia region for the recruitment and training of potential employees as well as hiring experience professionals. They are also seeking opportunities to partner with these schools to enhance their curricula to better prepare students for opportunities in the IT industry, including the types of roles found at IBM. In an effort to meet the demands for research relevant to service architecture and delivery, technical professionals and academicians turn to the reference works of IGI Global. IGI Global's most recent title,
Service Intelligence and Service Science: Evolutionary Technologies and Challenges
(edited by: Ho-fung Leung, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong; Dickson K.W. Chiu, Dickson Computer Systems, Hong Kong; Patrick C.K. Hung, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada) demonstrates the critical role such areas play in supporting service computing processes, and furthers an increase in current research, best practices, and new directions in service computing technologies and applications.
The book's editors state that, "the global economy and organizations are evolving to become service-oriented. There have recently been more and more research works on services provision, particularly with a cross-disciplinary approach. Beyond the Services Oriented Architecture (SOA), intelligence in computing is essential to achieve service excellence for the ever complicating requirements in the rapidly evolving global environment. This involves knowledge from various disciplines such as computer science, industrial and systems engineering, management science, operations research, marketing, contracts and negotiations; as well as culture transformation and integration methods based on beliefs, assumptions, principles, and values among organizations and humans. In this preface, we would also like to outline some challenges and opportunities for Service Intelligence and Service Science (SISS)."
The book intentionally seeks scientists, engineers, educators, industry people, policy makers, decision makers, and others who have insight, vision, and understanding of the big challenges in Service Intelligence for excellence in service provision. We also aim at helping in communicating and disseminating relevant recent research across disciplines, cultures, and communities. This book comprises of fourteen articles that covers some novel practical issues of this emerging field. They can be divided into three categories or sections: (i) basic concepts and theories, (ii) intelligent technologies, and (iii) applications and case study.
