Student Focused Software Aims to Steer Clear of Learning Setbacks

By IGI Global on Aug 11, 2010
Starfish Retention Solutions announced this week that they have partnered with Colorado State University's Global Campus to offer improved progress tracking of student development. University officials hope to use the technological advancements to better serve students who may fall behind or have trouble with their online classes. Associate dean of student success for CSU-Global Campus explained, "Ultimately, our goal with Starfish is to improve student retention. In the short term, we are focused on accelerating the time it takes to connect with a student and offer support when an issue has been identified either through direct faculty feedback or from the student's actual academic performance. As an online institution it is very important to know when a student is falling behind."

David Yaskin, CEO of Starfish, supports university efforts to ward off any potential problems. "Starfish Retention Solutions allows innovative, online institutions like CSU–Global Campus to work more efficiently when it comes to identifying the students who may need help and then reaching out to offer that help," he said ( www.prweb.com/releases/Starfish/CSUGC/prweb4371124.htm).

"By leveraging their existing course management system, they are turning real-time data into actionable information that is ultimately helping students achieve their education goals."- David Yaskin, CEO of Starfish Retention Solutions

Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental PedagogyCourse management systems such as those implemented by CSU and Starfish are finding greater popularity as online classes and programs grow exponentially across the globe. IGI Global has found that research concerning applied e-learning systems has garnered recent attention, as shown by requests for related titles aimed at course adoption use. Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis professors Patricia McGee, Colleen Carmean, and Ali Jafari's 2005 title, Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental Pedagogy, is the latest to be requested for instructor's review with intention to adopt.

Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental Pedagogy is a comprehensive overview of standards, practices and possibilities of course management systems in higher education. It focuses on best practices, research, standards and implementations, as well as the history of the CMS, while also discussing innovative practices in CMS instructional design that have been informed by learning theory and intentional pedagogy. The last section of this book is an invited section, where vendors (WebCT, OKI, Angel) and innovators address their vision of the tools, practices and possibilities in a true next generation. Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental Pedagogy represents the points-of-view of a variety of stakeholders and allows each to write in the style and language that is relevant to their field, making this an incredibly useful tool for practitioners, developers, administrators, faculty members, and students.

IGI continues to release innovative and relevant references like Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental Pedagogy, that may be appropriate for your class, such as:
