Teaching Students the Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness of E-Services

By IGI Global on May 13, 2010
Over the last decade, a paradigm shift has occurred in the way businesses and governments use Internet-based technologies and mobile communications to provide products and services to consumers. Two more recent examples include the Canadian Wheat Board and the Interior Ministry of Kuwait's government.

Through the e-services provided by the Canadian Wheat Board, rural farmers are now able to sign up contracts and conduct business online. The ability to view deliveries, track payments, and monitor case advances not only saves them time, but can even save them gas money, as it can be quite a drive to the grain elevator (Source: www.discovermoosejaw.com).

Kuwait's Interior Ministry, on the other hand, is implementing a Short Message Service (SMS) for some of its transactions and services. The service will issue reminders of permit expiration dates, send notifications of traffic violations and fines, and communicate general security announcements to the public. In a push to switch to e-government, Kuwaiti officials are making e-service expansion a top priority (Source: www.kuwaittimes.net).

In both instances, the use of e-services greatly reduces the number of individuals calling for assistance during peak hours, saving both time and money. Other familiar e-services include online banking, online retailing, e-learning, e-health, and e-libraries. A broad definition for e-services, then, is services that are produced, provided, and/or consumed through the use of ICT-networks including Internet-based systems and mobile solutions. Now that we know what e-services are, how do we best manage them?

Editor Scupola has compiled these research studies on the management of e-services, providing both information service technicians and managers with the latest technical advances in business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and e-government applications." - Book News Inc.

Cases on Managing E-ServicesCases on Managing E-Services, edited by Ada Scupola (Roskilde University, Denmark), presents a wide range of case studies on e-services in fields such as e-libraries, e-medicine, and e-insurance. It provides concrete examples of the successes and pitfalls of e-services management. According to Dr. Scupola, "The purpose of this book is to lay some theoretical foundations for understanding e-services, as well as to provide real life cases of e-services. The cases have been chosen in different fields […] to illustrate the complexity and the infancy of the e-service paradigm."
