Is TikTok’s US Ban Really Over?

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Feb 6, 2025
digitalWhat does the future of Tik Tok in the US look like? Just hours after the app was banned, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to delay the ban, granting US users an extra 75 days of access. While TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, pushed for the ban to be lifted, it was ultimately President Trump's action that extended the deadline. Supporters of the ban stated that its purpose was to prevent the data of US citizens from being collected and given to foreign governments.

At this time, the ban has not been overturned, as it is still projected to resume after the 75-day period is up. After that, President Donald Trump could direct the Department of Justice (DoJ) to "ignore it," effectively allowing app stores like Apple and Google to continue offering TikTok for download without facing legal repercussions. What will happen once the 75 days are over is still uncertain, as speculation continues about TikTok's future in the US. For more information on the issue of cybersecurity policies and data privacy, editor Dr. Nika Chitadze provides valuable insights in the book, Cyber Security Policies and Strategies of the World's Leading States (ISBN: 9781668488461).
