Turn Your Special Issue Platinum

By IGI Global Open Access Division on Feb 14, 2022
woman working with notebook and laptop You’ve heard of full journals receiving OA funding support, but did you know that if you are guest editing an OA special issue, that it is entirely possible to receive full OA funding on the special issue-level? Oftentimes, when OA funding has not yet been secured for the full journal, there is success in obtaining OA funding on a smaller scale, for a set number of articles (typically a special themed issue), which can then later put the full journal one step closing to becoming platinum.
Regardless of whether the special issue is being published in a gold or hybrid open access journal, it is possible to elevate it to platinum OA status (which means the special issue has full funding support), alleviating the need for the authors to pay an open access article processing charge (APC) should their work be accepted following the double-blind peer review.

An individual guest editor or institution/university may fund a special issue. Funders may choose to fund the entire special issue, or a set number of articles. Once the APCs for the special issue are paid for by the funder, each individual author will no longer have to provide their own funding.
Special issues are a wonderful opportunity for researchers to collaborate and publish research that is centered around a specific topic or theme. Special issues also present the opportunity to showcase the best papers from conferences, associations, or research institutions.

Open access publishing with IGI global offers numerous benefits, including:

  • CC BY 4.0 license allows authors to retain the copyright to their work and hold greater sharing power.
  • Increased discoverability of published content (89% higher download rate).
  • Affordable OA processing charges and flexible subsidies and discounts. Learn More >
  • Specialty author services including copy editing and proofreading. Learn More >
  • Ethical publishing through a rigorous double-blind peer review. IGI Global is a full member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
  • Content is submitted for consideration to major indexes, abstracting services, and OA repositories.
  • Wider professional recognition and opportunities for networking and collaboration due to the content being wholly open.
  • Full publishing services with one-to-one
    editorial support.
  • ORCID integration.
  • Compliance with OA mandates
APC pricing varies from journal to journal and also depends on the number of article manuscripts each funding body decides to fund. For more information regarding special issue publication and funding, please contact IGI Global’s Open Access Division
