As open access (OA) is continuously growing and changing, many researchers, publishers, and librarians still have many questions, misconceptions, and confusion. Although OA has been around for some time now, there are constantly new mandates and programs being launched globally that make it almost impossible to understand all the intricacies associated.
As a publisher, we encounter our own set of challenges as researchers are only able to publish in specific publications due to the aforementioned mandates, as they are only able to direct their work to gold open access journals (as hybrid open access journals do not fulfill the requirements), as well as journals that are accepted into specific indexing databases. Therefore, we have had to conduct our own research, exploring different resources available regarding the positions from other publishers, indexes, consortia, and ethical organizations to develop our own understanding of the OA movement.
Our recommendation for those seeking to learn more about the OA movement, is to garner basic knowledge about the types of open access, which include:
Green Open Access
Follows traditional publishing model but self-archiving by the authors to an institutional or subject repository is permitted.
Hybrid Open Access
Authors choose to publish via the traditional, subscription-based model or as an open
access article.
Gold Open Access
All articles published in the journal are freely accessible.
Diamond/Platinum Open Access
Follow Gold OA publishing model but have no APC. Typically requires external funding source.
Bronze Open Access
Freely accessible through publisher’s page, but no licensing identified. May not be available for reuse.
And as part of our commitment to producing high-quality OA content, we also want to support the OA movement by providing our community of collaborators with some recommended resources regarding OA:
Open Access Resources of Interest
These resources cover a wide spectrum of open access issues including OA mandates, the differences in OA publication models, benefits of publishing under OA, licensing, ethical considerations, among other topics.
