A New Pocket-Sized Innovation is Making a Giant Impact in Child Protection Services

How UNICEF is Utilizing Information Technology to Strengthen Their Support for Child Welfare

By IGI Global Author Relations Team on Jul 16, 2019
Recently, UNICEF released a new online database and application, Juba, that is enabling better protection for children in emergency situations. Originally created for South Sudan, this application is now being utilized globally as it streamlines caseworkers’ workload by removing the need for paper-based work while in the field and enabling them to focus more time on supporting children. Additionally, it has the ability to take photos, record audio, and add children to their system, while linking across different agencies and countries, to ensure that there is continual support of each child.

Along with this application, UNICEF released their first case management handbook, which helps caseworkers navigate how to handle vulnerable cases, reduce trauma, assess children and family data, and ensure that children in high-risk situations can receive the specialized support they need. According to UNICEF, “The new handbook supporting case management in the field and the new information management system will together strengthen the quality and reach of case management services…while building and strengthening the social workforce capacities.”

It is IGI Global’s hope that this field of research, as well as the availability of technologies and aid, is expanded to ensure that children around the world are provided with quality care. As such, IGI Global partners with The World Forgotten Children’s Foundation (WFCF), a private non-profit foundation that supports the medical needs of disabled orphaned children in developing countries. Through this partnership, IGI Global donates 5% of all purchases made through the IGI Global Online Bookstore to WFCF causes, which have included providing wheelchairs and technological aids to children in remote villages of Africa, supporting orphanages around the world, and providing cancer support to disabled orphaned children.

To help IGI Global continue their mission to provide quality care to children around the world, purchase directly from IGI Global, and find below the latest research on technology’s impact on social work. All of these resources are featured in IGI Global’s InfoSci-Journals database:
