Every week IGI Global releases an ample volume of open access (OA) content into the open research community, including scholarly journal articles, book chapters, and more recently full OA books. Now, more than ever, it is critical that those freely accessible manuscripts become disseminated and discoverable as is their intended use.
Repositories are one of the many ways for researchers to gain recognition and maximum exposure for their work. For copyrighted material, there are generally limitations to where authors can post their work (View IGI Global’s
Fair Use Policy), but for OA content, under Creative Commons licensing, the opportunities are virtually limitless. While IGI Global will work to share OA research content with a multitude of known repositories, authors are also encouraged to share their OA research as frequently as possible by depositing their manuscripts into OA repositories and institutional repositories worldwide.
OA repositories in particular offer a digital platform that stores research and provides free, immediate, and permanent access to research – content can be accessed, downloaded, and distributed. Most OA repositories and resources are free to use and only require signing up for an account to get started. They are a wonderful complement to indexing databases (e.g. Scopus, Web of Science, etc.) and OA directories that also help achieve optimal visibility of scholarly content.
Here are just a few platforms that offer open sharing of scholarly resources:
- CORE - The world’s largest aggregator of open access research papers from repositories and journals. It is a not-for-profit service dedicated to the open access mission. 254 million papers are currently searchable in this repository. Get Started
- Academia.edu - A platform for sharing academic research. Academia’s goal is to ensure that every paper, ever written, is on the internet, available for free. 28 million papers have been uploaded to Academia.edu. Get Started
