Using Tech to Make it Rain

Water Scarcity Crisis

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Mar 6, 2025
digitalAs climate change continues to escalate, it is estimated that nearly 1.8 billion people will experience water scarcity by 2025. The Middle East is considered one of the most affected regions, with about 83% of its population at risk of water shortages. The UAE, for example, experiences less than 20% of the rainfall seen in cities like London.

To address this water scarcity, the United Arab Emirates has turned to cloud seeding to improve cloud water retention. This technique involves aircrafts releasing 1 kilogram of salt-based materials into clouds during periods of precipitation to increase the size of raindrops. Although this practice has been used since the 1990s, recent advancements suggest that nanotechnology could potentially triple its efficiency, with the addition of electrical pulses potentially boosting the process by up to nine times.

As testing continues in both the United States and the UAE, the exact environmental impact and the role these technologies could play in combating climate change remains uncertain. Editor Dr. Rachid Amrousse discusses this development in environmental technology in his book, Innovative Materials for Environmental and Aerospace Applications (ISBN: 9798337306698).
