A Third Of All Tree Cover Loss May Be Permanent. What Are Scientists Doing About It?
The continuous development of information technologies may be the key to unlocking the potential for improvement of systems such as healthcare, economics, transportation, politics, and more. One such example is the implementation of information technology to combat deforestation and illegal wildlife destruction. According to the World Resources Institute, the world has lost 437 million hectares (Mha) of tree coverage since the turn of the century, equivalent to about 11% of global tree coverage in the year 2000. Regrowth may occur through natural regeneration or tree planting in some cases, though about a third of the loss is attributed to deforestation and repurposing of these regions to agriculture and human settlement. The Bangladesh Forest Department has implemented new technology to help stop wildlife trafficking in several of the country’s protected forest areas.
"The Encyclopedia offers to the reader a complete set of conceptual approaches, with its related application methodologies and experienced recommendations, resulting in a knowledge platform which can be addressed by project designers, implementers and users, becoming an indisputable reference in a changing market...With an independent and well assessed coverage and discussion for several technologies available in the market, completed by a modern view of its implementation, the Encyclopedia is expressively recommended for any reader who is interested on knowing more about tools, methods, projects, business cases and implementations." – Prof. George Jamil, Informações em Rede C e T Ltda, Brazil
As discussed in the above article, it is imperative that authorities are utilizing the latest technology to stay ahead of destructive forces and ensure balanced Forest Management. Chapter 89, “Renewable Resources and Value-Based Complex Forest Management,” investigates the question of multifactor value-driven management of renewable resources of complex forest systems, and discusses value-oriented models, based on a multi-attribute utility function.

An excerpt from chapter 89 of the book reads, "In the present chapter we will consider value based control of logging process with jointly accounted for complex social, ecological and economic factors in the modeling and control. Cases of renewable natural resources are considered including economic efficiency and social effect for the population.
The new element is taking into account the social impact on the population, such as pay, ecological effects such as biodiversity and their combination with economic efficiency in logging. This is achieved by constructing a multifactor utility function which under the different control models is used as an objective function or as a part of the differential equation describing the production process…” Preview the chapter here.

Is Your Internet Search Really Private?
When searching the internet, it is possible for one to reveal certain information that they would rather keep private. For example, looking up medical symptoms online could inadvertently reveal their health conditions to Google, an online medical database like WebMD, and perhaps hundreds of these companies’ advertisers and business partners. MIT researchers developed a protocol known as Simple PIR, in which a server performs much of the underlying cryptographic work in advance before a client even sends a query. The Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Fifth Edition provides an understanding of modern technological tools and their applications through the exploration of the latest research.
internet security
It is essential to understand how to protect crucial information online. Chapter 31 of the Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Fifth Edition, “A Utility Theory of Privacy and Information Sharing,” looks at how the enormous data storage capacities and computational power in the e-big data era have created unforeseen opportunities for big data hoarding corporations to reap hidden benefits from individuals' information sharing, which occurs bit by bit in small tranches over time.
"The Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology continues its tradition of presenting a comprehensive, international snapshot of the latest information technologies of interest to librarians, academicians, and researchers from numerous industries." – Jennifer Bartlett, Oral History Librarian, University of Kentucky Libraries
“Utility theory is concerned with people’s choices and decisions based on preferences and values (Fishburn, 1968). Representing satisfaction experienced, utility is derived from the self-attributed worth and goodness of an option compared to other options. Standard neo-classical economic theory describes utility as a set of internally-consistent assumptions about options in the wish to maximize utility (Fishburn, 1968). Utility theory has leveraged as one of the most dominant theories in economics as an underpinning of rational choice and game theory.…” Preview the chapter here.
