Dr. Linda Daniela shares her research on SMART Education
Wiring Into Education: How Education Expert Dr. Linda Daniela is Paving the Way for More Technological Advances in Education
By
IGI Global
on
Apr 24, 2019
There is no denying that technology has crept into every aspect of our lives. With this spread of technological advances impacting everyday life, the education field is beginning to look for evidence-based proof that technology can help and/or hinder the expansive learning capabilities of students all over the world. UNICEF has recently announced a new initiative, called
Project Connect
, where the intention is to bring internet access and, therefore, more technology into every school in the world. The belief is that without access to internet and further technological advances, a subset of the population of the world is being surpassed quickly, especially in a world that is so driven by utilization of technology in and out of the classroom.
Dr. Linda Daniela
, professor and senior researcher at the University of Latvia, Latvia, co-Editor-in-Chief of the
International Journal of Smart Education and Urban Society
(IJSEUS)
, shares her research on the impacts of smart education and educational technologies on the scholarship of adults and children, in an IGI Global interview found below.
What inspired you to pursue research activities in your field?
My research area is strongly connected with the use of technology and incorporating diverse technological solutions in education. As technologies have entered our everyday life and the educational field, the attitude to technology is still very diverse, which can vary from fear to fascination. There is a part of people who believe that the use of technologies in education reduces the ability of learners to analyze information by themselves, reduces the willingness to seek innovative solutions, and more. Additionally, there is a part that, in turn, treats it irrefutably positive, without considering the various risks arising from the use of technologies in the learning process. Both positions are unproductive and are already doubted by positive examples where the technology-enhanced learning process has substantially changed the educational process by providing the ability to actively engage in knowledge creation and providing access to knowledge anywhere and anytime. However, there are still many questions that need to be answered to ensure that the use of the opportunities offered by technologies is meaningful.
Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?
I am interested in exploring and analyzing the pedagogical aspects of Technology Enhanced Learning, such as the use of technology in the active learning process, how technologies and technological solutions can help in knowledge construction, and how technologies can be used to mitigate the risks of social exclusion in various aspects - like digital gap, gender gap, etc. Another area which should be researched from the educational point of view: how to promote media literacy and support the development of computational thinking. The third research direction in which I am deeply involved is the role of educational robotics in promoting knowledge construction.
In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?
My recent research about Technology Enhanced Learning processes have shown some directions on how to update pedagogy in order to provide the essence for a meaningful learning process where different digital teaching materials are interactively used to help scaffold students in constructing their knowledge.
What are the future directions of your research areas?
It is necessary to conduct longitudinal studies of technological opportunities in the study process, both by analyzing their impact on cognitive processes and on finding solutions to scaffold students, how to assess the impact of Technology Enhanced Learning process, and how to promote the development of new innovations.
The main direction of the future research is to look for the principles of Smart Pedagogy in various dimensions: in the various domains of and different levels of Education, from pre-school to Higher Education; how to use different Digital Learning Materials, Learning Managment Systems; possibilities of virtual and augmented reality; how can technologies be used to provide assisted learning?
In fact, the dimensions of this research field are immeasurably wide, and there are numerous questions that will arise.
What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your industry/field over the past several months and what would you say are some of the innovative research directions you foresee in the future? How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these innovations?
I believe that my research in the field of Smart Pedagogy will provide answers to the questions that arise in topical pedagogy principles that can be used in Technology Enhanced Learning environment in a way to scaffold students through all the dimensions of education, but at the same time to reduce risks of uncritical use of different technologies.
What has your experience publishing with IGI Global been like?
The experience with IGI Global has been positive because they are open to new ideas and offer a variety of opportunities for scientists to inform the society about current research, start discussions on emerging research trends, and provide a platform for the development of new knowledge.
We would like to thank
Dr. Linda Daniela
for sharing her expertise on Smart Education, the utilization of technology in Education, and the impacts technology has on the student and his/her learning.
